MONTHLY REPORT FOR DECEMBER 1989/JANUARY 1990
The Parks and Recreation Annual Commission Christmas Potluck Dinner
will be held immediately following the regularly scheduled
Commission meeting on December 18, 1989, at the newly dedicated
Senior Center.
Staff recently distributed 104 request for proposals to golf
course/landscape architects to submit qualifications and proposals
to design and assist the City in the development of the 18 hole
regulation size municipal golf course at Lake Calavera. A total
of eight (8) responses were received, and they will be reviewed on
Thursday, December 14th with the Golf Course Technical/Steering
Committee. Further review will entail interviews with the
respondents regarding their proposals and the review board will
make recommendations to the City Council.
The Dedication and Grand Opening Ceremony for the new Senior Center
was a big success. Although the exact number of people in
attendance was not recorded, hundreds of people stood in amazement
at this newest edition to Carslbad's quality municipal facilities.
The Sports Department just finished the first Youth Cross Country
program in which 30 participants from Carlsbad competed. A number
of them finished within the top 12! Youth Basketball sign-ups are
completed. Four hundred youngsters signed-up for the program.
Adult Sports' total number of teams for the year was 360, in 60
leagues consisting of: basketball, volleyball, soccer, and
Softball. This puts Carlsbad as the ninth busiest Sports
Department in Southern California!
At the Swim Complex, a two hour parking limit went into effect
December 5th and is working out great according to compliments from
the public and compliance by Carlsbad High School students. The
pool also recently received a new blue windscreen that looks great
and functions even better — thanks to Chuck Walden. Recently,
Safety Training classes that have been conducted at the aquatic
complex include WSI Retraining and Lifeguard Instructor Training.
In January 1990, additional WSI Retraining and a Basic Life Support
CPR course will be conducted.
The Harding Community Center has completed its first computerized
recreation registration session with 1,137 participants. The gross
revenue for the 1989 Fall Session was $37,000.
The two major special events for December are Frosty's Fun Crafts,
which will be held on December 13th and 14th, and the Mistletoe and
Snow Craft Party for kids on December 21st. The Mistletoe Party
.is a full day event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A good idea is to drop
the kids off and go shopping ... support your local Carlsbad mall.
