MONTHLY REPORT FOR JANUARY/FEBRUARY 1990
The Sports Office Youth basketball registration has just been
completed with more than 450 youngsters competing on 50 youth
teams. This represents an increase of 20% for the 1990 season.
Registration is now being taken for 3 on 3 basketball at the high
school level. This represents one of the first efforts to help the
high school student and his/or her needs.
The Seniors successfully have met the Fieldstone challenge by
raising $20,000! Fieldstone will match this with another $20,000.
Funds will be used for.the purchase of a Senior passenger van.
The Harding Center is opening two more bus trips for "Phantom of
the Opera" which is scheduled for May and June. Registration will
start February 5th.
Again, congratulations to Beryl Philp for an outstanding job, as
she was awarded "Employee of the Year" at our recent Commission
dinner.
At Calavera Community Park this weekend, Saturday January 13th,
there will be a golf clinic in conjunction with the Carlsbad Golf
Association, Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course, American Golf
Association, P.G.A. and Dooley McCluskeys, and it is free to kids.
There will be two sessions: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and 1:00
p.m. to 3:00 p.m., for 60 kids per session ages 8 -18. A free
barbecue for kids will be held in between the two sessions
compliments of Dooley McCluskeys.
For the month of December, the Recreation Department took in $8,637
in registration fees for various department programs.
Beginning on January 16th the Swim Complex will have Phase I W.S.I,
re-training. Starting January llth, there will be Advanced
Lifesaving for a Lifeguard training progression course. The Swim
Complex will host a Masters Swim Meet February 4th, 8:00 a.m. to
12:00 noon.
P & D Technologies, the environmental consultants that will be
preparing the Environmental Impact Report for the Lake Calavera
golf course site, have begun their reconnaissance of the site.
They will be looking for areas of sensitive vegetation and
archeological significanct sites to avoid during the planning of
the golf course.
Four golf course architectual firms will be making a presentation
to the Golf Course Steering Committee/Technical Advisory Committee
on January 30, 1990. The Committee's will make their
recommendation to the City Council with selection of one of the
firms to design the golf course for the City.
