MONTHLY REPORT FOR JANUARY/FEBRUARY 1990
Approximately two hundred and fifty (250) junior high school age community youth
recently attended a Valentine's Dance at the Harding Street Community Center,
sponsored by the Recreation Division. The activity was well received by the
participants and very well chaperoned by Department staff, parental volunteers.
A special thanks is also extended to "Carlsbad's finest," who provided highly
visible support.
The preliminary environmental analysis for the municipal golf course site at Lake
Calavera, prepared by P & D Technologies, has been received by the City and is
currently being reviewed by staff. This information will be passed on to the
golf course architect to be used in conjunction with the course design. It is
expected that the Steering/Technical Advisory Committee will be making a
recommendation on selection of a golf course architect within the next two weeks.
This recommendation will then be forwarded to the City Council for the final,
selection.
The Banquet room at the new Senior Center on Pine Avenue is at full capacity
everyday, Monday through Friday, for the noon time lunch program. This is just
one example of how well the facility has been received and utilized by the
community. They're busier than ever before.
The Youth Baseball Clinic held during early February at Calavera Hills Community
Park was a big hit with youngsters ages 8 - 15. Over one hundred (100) boys and
girls received tips from the big leaguers as representatives from the Padre
organization volunteered their expertise to improve the baseball skills of those
in attendance. Sponsored by the City's Recreation Department and Carlsbad High
School baseball team, the event was co-sponsored by the Fieldstone Company.
Appreciation is extended for the community support and a special thank you to
Joe Pimintel who volunteer many hours to promote this event.
The Adult Sports section is currently taking registration for adult Softball.
By the end of February, 108 teams in men's, women's, and co-ed softball will have
signed up. Men's basketball is nearing the mid-season point, and 36 teams are
vying for championships in 6 different divisions.
The Youth Sports section is currently finishing up youth basketball and is
looking forward to youth track and field in March. Scheduled for Stagecoach Park
and Carlsbad High School on successive Saturdays in March, the track meets expect
to draw more than 300 local runners to compete.
