MONTHLY REPORT FOR APRIL 1990
The Golf Course Committee will be meeting on April 13th to discuss golf
performance standards and will review the revised golf course layout including
the environmental constraints areas as prepared by the architect.
The Fieldstone Community Challenge has been met! The City of Carlsbad Parks and
Recreation Department recently collected $20,000 to meet the Fieldstone
challenge. Our Seniors division received a check from Fieldstone Development
Co. for $20,000 in matching funds. With $40,000+, we are ready to purchase our
mini van for Seniors.
The Adult Sports division is currently taking registration for Coed Volleyball
and 3-Person Basketball teams. Approximately 70 teams are expected to compete
in these two sports leagues over the next four months. Youth Sports youngsters
are presently training for the Countywide Youth Track Meet on May 12th at
S.D.S.U. More than 100 youngsters from Carlsbad are expected to compete.
Ballfield Maintenance finds itself very busy this time of year maintaining 15
different ballfields daily for the various youth-adult baseball and softball
leagues. There were approximately 15,000 individual visits to our Calavera
Center in the month of March for facility rentals including use of the
gymnasiums, picnic areas, and ballfields.
The Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Summer Brochure will be out the week of May
7th. Registrations for various recreation summer programs will begin that same
week. An immediate trip to Magic Mountain is scheduled for Wednesday, April
llth. About 35 junior high kids are signed up to go. We are also expecting
5,000 kids and parents for the big Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday, April 14th at
both Calavera and Stagecoach Parks.
In recognition of Earth Day/Arbor Day, the Carlsbad Kiwanis Club coordinated the
planting of over 400 trees throughout our City parks on Saturday March 31, 1990.
The volunteers were assisted by Parks division staff. An additional 200 trees
will be planted at various parks and open space areas during the month of April.
Beach Clean-Up Day was a successful effort by approximately 85 residents who
joined together on March 31st to be sure that Carlsbad beaches were kept trash
free. Our thanks go to Carlsbad High School students and faculty for helping
out.
The Parks Superintendent has mailed out Requests for Proposals (RFP's) to a list
of Landscape Architects to help design improvements for the Upper Valley Junior
High School soccer field.
We have over 40 Community Garden plots rented out to some terrific community
gardeners. Lush vegetables and beautiful flowers are springing up as some of
the citizens are enjoying their form of recreation.
