MONTHLY REPORT FOR MAY 1990
Recreation's Special Events Division will be holding its annual Garage Sale on
Saturday, June 2nd, at Holiday Park. There is no cost for shoppers, and hours
will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wonderful bargains will be available. Come early
and stay late.
Our Youth Sports Division reports 45 youngsters competed this past weekend in
the Countywide Track Meet. Seventeen of those youngsters qualified to run in
Riverside at the Statewide Track Meet over the coming Memorial Day weekend.
Our Adult Sports Division is currently registering for Coed Soccer as the 3-
Person Basketball and Coed Volleyball Leagues begin their third week of action.
Also, a Men's Grass Volleyball Tournament was recently held at Calavera with
approximately 12 teams participating.
Fred Cafarelli was recently chosen as co-part-time Employee of the Quarter for
his outstanding daily maintenance of the ballfields at Stagecoach Park. The
honors are shared by Pam Landin who has been providing receptionist cashier
services at Calavera Hills Community Park. Congratulations to both.
The City Council recently selected the architect team of Collet/Robinson to
develop the golf course plan for the Lake Calavera site. P & D Technologies,
the environmental consultants, are currently reviewing the plan in order to
develop the most environmentally sensitive design. The preliminary plan is
scheduled to be completed by July 1990.
The Summer Brochure is out! Summer session classes begin the week of June 4th.
Both walk-in and mail-in registrations are presently being taken for our summer
programs.
The Annual City Employees Summer Picnic will be held Saturday, July 14th at
Calavera Community Park. Hope to see you there!
The AAU Western Regional Karate Championships were held at UC Riverside on April
9th. Fifteen people from Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Karate program held at
Stagecoach Park qualified for AAU National Championships in New Orleans on June
28th and 29th. By placing 1st in the AAU Western Regional Championships in
April, Kelly Floyd and Jay Sparks qualified to go to the Junior Olympics in
Tampa, Florida.
Our Parks Division has assumed the median landscape maintenance of the section
of Carlsbad Boulevard in front of the SDG&E plant. Our parks crews are cutting
back on watering at all park areas in accordance with the Stage II Water Alert.
During the month of April, the Knotts Berry Farm Clogging Contest was held.
Carlsbad Parks and Recreation's North County doggers competed in the Clogging
Contest. The Carlsbad doggers placed as follows:
Beginning Show Team (35 & over) - First Place Ribbon
Beginning Line Dance (35 & over) - Second Place Ribbon
Overall Beginning Entry - First Place trophy
