MONTHLY REPORT FOR OCTOBER 1990
The Annual Parks and Recreation Commissioners' Christmas Dinner has been scheduled for
Monday, December 17, 1990, at the Senior Center. The event will immediately follow the
Commission meeting which will also be held at the Senior Center.
The Youth Sports Division of the Recreation Department is currently accepting registration for
basketball and cross country. It is estimated that more than 500 youngsters will take part in these
programs over the next several months. The Adult Sports Division is currently in mid-season with
softball, basketball and volleyball league competition. More than 150 teams and approximately
2,000 individuals are participating.
Staff is currently negotiating a contract with Van Dyke and Associates, a San Diego landscape
architectural firm for the design of Larwin Park. The schedule for design and construction of the
park site is yet to be determined. However, the first task will be to provide a preliminary design.
Lake Calavera golf course is still underway with the environmental impact report currently being
prepared by P & D Technologies. The adoption of the revised Landscape Manual will soon be
considered by the City Council during the October 17 meeting.
The Special Events Division of the Recreation Department is conducting their Annual Halloween
Carnival at Calavera Community Center on Friday, October 26th and at Stagecoach Park on
Wednesday, October 31st. Both events will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. with over 1,000
participants expected at each facility.
The recently held Parks and Recreation Volunteer Barbecue staged at Magee Park on Friday,
September 28, 1990, was a very big success with over 280 volunteers and sponsors being
acknowledged for their outstanding community support.
The recently formed after school Kids' Club program has continued to grow and expanded
programming is now offered at three facilities including Calavera Hills Community Park and
Stagecoach Community Parks as well as Pine Elementary School.
The City Council recently approved the Parks and Recreation Commission's recommendation
regarding acceptance of donations for City youth sponsored recreation programs and events. The
new Council policy will read as follows:
"In order to provide wholesome recreational opportunities, the City of Carlsbad will neither solicit
nor accept donations for youth programs open to anyone under the age of 21 years that may be
detrimental to the health, safety or well being of the youth involved. This exclusion will include but
not be limited to alcohol beverage or distribution companies, tobacco product companies and
businesses engaged in the sale or manufacture of drug paraphernalia, pornographic materials, or
firearmr^ttaless for the purpose of Gun Safety classes)."
