Director's Report, October/November 1990 10 November 13, 1990 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Keith Beverly, Senior Management Analyst FROM: Stacy Weaver, Recreation Leader III MONTHLY REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 1990 Special Events again conducted their annual Halloween Carnivals at Calavera Hills Community Center and Stagecoach Park last month. Turn out consisted of over 2500 participants between both facilities. Sponsors for the event were Capital Bank of Carlsbad and the Fieldstone Company. The Carlsbad Youth Cross Country team participated in a meet with Vista November 10, 1990. Over 100 youngsters were expected to attend. 1990 youth basketball registration is underway; 400 players are expected. Adult Sports concluded their 1990 coed soccer program at Buena Vista ballfields. Over 120 players participated. Softball season is still in the works with 109 teams playing at Stagecoach and Calavera. Adult basketball is also underway with 240 participants. The Parks Division is in the completion stage of the beach/bluff turf area on the State whale walk. The area has been upgraded with a new automated irrigation system. Renovation of existing turf with the application of new seed and installation of landscape plants will finalize the project. The Swim Complex hosted the North Coast Aquatics Pentathlon swim meet on October 27th and 28th. Approximately 1000 swimmers participated in five events. 1990 summer class totals consisted of 176 classes with 1441 swimmers registered. Weekend specialty classes totalled 25 with 192 participants. Fall hours start 11/17/90. The newly revised Landscape Manual will be considered for adoption on November 13th during the City Council meeting. At the November 6th meeting, the City Council approved the consultant agreement for the design of Larwin Park. The work will be performed by Van Dyke and Associates of San Diego. The agreement outlines a detailed scope of work, design schedule, and fee proposal. A request was recently submitted to Redevelopment for consideration to apply for Community Development Block Grant funds (CDBG) for fencing and lighting improvements at the three fields at Chase Field and for the purchase of an electronic Scoreboard to be installed on field two (2).
