Director's Report, November/December 1990 u 3 December 11, 1990 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Senior Management Analyst FROM: Recreation Leader II, Stacy Weaver In celebration of their first year anniversary, the Senior Center is hosting "Open House" on December 10-14th from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. Special Events held its first Annual Youth Winter Dance on November 30th at Harding Community Center. Over 200 Junior High School Students attended. On November 18th the Coed Six-Man Volleyball tournament attracted 10 teams. Special Events is conducting another first Annual Event, the Holiday Decorating Contest. Businesses and homes are invited to participate in the event and will be judged in several categories. The Awards Ceremony will be held on December 20, at 3:00 p.m. at That Pizza Place. The building rehabilitation at Harding Community Center is well under way. Half of the facility is now complete. Contractors have installed air conditioning units, sprayed acoustical ceiling, and laid new carpet. The Parks Department upgraded the landscape at Harding Community Center and planted palm trees in the front. In the Sports Division, the Youth leagues has reached an all time high in Basketball. Five hundred twenty youngsters in grades 3-8 will be participating this season. Saturday, December 8th was the opening game of the league play. Adult Sports is rapping up their basketball and volleyball leagues. Both attracted 24 teams and both will begin play offs this week. One hundred eight mens, womens, and coed softball teams are also in the midst of playoffs. Overall the Sports Department had a very successful season. Kids Club is conducting Santa's Workshop this week at three different facilities, Pine Elementary School, Stagecoach Park and Calavera Hills Community Center. Approximately 75 children will participate in arts and crafts, play games and meet with Santa Claus. The Parks and Recreation Department assisted the Big Bang Committee with the Tree Lighting Ceremony held at Rotary Park on Sunday, December 2nd. The event was very successful. Approximately 500 children and Santa Claus attended the event. Parks and Recreation staff also helped judge the Christmas Boat Parade held on December 8th at Agua Hedionda Lagoon. The Parade was put on by Bristol Cove Boat and Ski Club. Twenty boats were judged. The part-time employee award winners for our Recreation Division for the October through December quarter are: Milt Kaplan, Recreation Leader III at Stagecoach Community Center, and Sondee Oiler, Recreation Leader III for the Special Events section.
