DEPT
TITLE:OF OAK TREES
(INFO)
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Review and discuss the possibility to transplant Oak trees from the Aviara site. If necessary,
direct staff to return to the Commission for further action.
ITEM EXPLANATION;
Commissioner Ward has requested staff to present information to the Commission regarding
the opportunity to transplant Oak trees from the Aviara site. In conversation with
representatives from the Aviara development, the potential to transplant Oak trees during
Phase III of their development is a possibility. Phase III development will not begin until
the Summer of 1992. However, an option is available to transplant existing Oak trees which
currently exist within the Aviara park site. Since the City currently owns the park parcel,
the displacement of the trees is at the City's discretion. There are approximately 4 to 5 Oak
trees of varying size existing on the park parcel. The cost to transplant the Oak trees would
range from a cost of $8,000 to $35,000 per tree and would be subject to a time frame of
transplant completion of 6 to 9 months. A firm has recently completed a number of
transplantations which have a high rate of success in terms of the tree's ability to survive.
If the Commission wishes to pursue this issue, staff will return with additional information
and an agenda item for action at a future commission meeting.
