MONTHLY REPORT FOR JANUARY-FEBRUARY 1991
On February 15th, the Recreation Department's Special Events division hosted a Youth
Valentine Dance at the Harding Street Community auditorium. Over two hundred and fifty
(250) junior high school aged kids enjoyed an evening of dancing and socializing with their
peers. Special Events will also stage the 3rd Annual Golf Clinic for kids this weekend,
February 23rd, at Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course. Over 100 participants are registered to
attend this free golf instruction from the pros with each child to receive a golf club and a
hot dog barbecue lunch.
The Adult Sports division recently completed softball registration for mens, womens, and co-
ed league play. Over 100 teams will compete citywide seven days per week. Carlsbad's 4th
Annual Adult Mens' Softball tournament will be held on March 2nd. This one day double
elimination tournament will feature approximately ten (10) teams with the competition
scheduled at Stagecoach Park.
Congratulations are in order for a couple of Recreation Supervisors. First, Robin Bettin
recently received the California Parks and Recreation Society's (C.P.R.S.) Professional
Recognition Award for 1990. The Society's prestigious award was bestowed upon Robin
February 8th, 1991, at the C.P.R.S. Annual Awards and Installation Banquet. Having served
C.P.R.S. in a professional and diligent manner for a number of years, Robin recently
completed a one year assignment as President for District XII (San Diego and Imperial
Counties). Secondly, but certainly of no less significance, Jim Bradshaw (everybody knows
Jim) was recently elected as the 1991 President of the San Diego County Municipal Athletic
Federation Sports organization. Congratulations to two outstanding Recreation Department
employees.
Cupid recently attracted over 115 young at heart seniors to Carlsbad's Senior Center when
the Senior division hosted its Annual Valentines Dance. On February 22nd, the Center will
feature a Crime Prevention for Seniors seminar which is expected to attract a large number
of interested participants. Nursery Land will conduct informative classes at the center when
it presents educational information and discussion on "Indoor/Outdoor Plant Care" and "How
to Garden with Less Water." Twenty-one seniors received free hearing exams when Dr.
Illich recently visited the Center and offered his professional complimentary services.
On Thursday, February 21,1991, at 6:00 p.m. the Parks Department, in conjunction with the
Municipal Projects division, will host a community meeting to discuss the development of
Larwin Park. Representatives from Van Dyke and Associates, the park designers, will
present the preliminary park plans for community input. The community response will be
presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission on Monday, February 25th, when they
will be asked to enSbrse the conceptual design for the development of the park site.
