Director's Report 08 March 12, 1991 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Senior Management Analyst FROM: Stacy Weaver, Recreation Leader II MONTHLY REPORT FOR FEBRUARY-MARCH 1991 The Parks and Recreation Department recently had four supervisors attend the Annual California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) Conference on March 8th, 9th, and 10th in Santa Clara, California. Carlsbad was recognized all weekend as we took 2nd place for the 1988 and 1989 triathlon posters in the promotions contest. Congratulations to Robin Bettin who attended and received a citation award for the State Supervisors Section. Dave Milikan was also presented as the new 1991 District XII Supervisors representative. Doug Duncanson and Gail Watts attended as well. The Swim Complex recently hosted the annual Jr. Olympic Championship for San Diego and Imperial Counties on March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Two thousand five hundred (2,500) people participated in this very successful event. Congratulations to North Coast Aquatics who won for the first time ever. The high school swim season is underway. Students are actively swimming in two meets per week. Swim Complex staff is offering safety training classes open to the public during the week of March 23rd - 30th. Park Maintenance Division installed new playground equipment at two local park sites in Carlsbad (Laguna Riviera and La Costa Canyon). New lighting improvements will be functional at Chase Field as of March 19th. Staff will be re-aiming and cleaning the existing fixtures on the field to increase lighting efficiency. The Parks' staff has also initiated this year's Arbor Day program. During th entire month of March Carlsbad residents can obtain a free drought tolerant tree upon request. They will be given away on a first come first serve basis to all Carlsbad residents possessing a driver's license indicating a Carlsbad residence. Speaking of the drought situation, the Parks Division is also dealing with the drought by severely cutting back on water usage. In some areas of the City, irrigation has been cut off completely. Adult Sports has begun its Softball season with a successful 108 teams and 18 divisions. Recently, the adult sports program has accommodated two thousand five hundred (2,500) participants, 67% of which are Carlsbad residents and 18% of which are non-residents that work in Carlsbad. Youth Sports is hosting its Annual Track and Field Meet on Saturday, March 23rd. An estimated 200-250 youngsters will attend. The event is held at Carlsbad High School for children ranging from ages 8-14 years old. 09
