TITLE: DIRECTOR'S REPORT (INFO) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept and file. ITEM EXPLANATION; Refer to attached Director's Report June-July 1991. EXHIBIT; 1. Director's Report 09 July 11, 1991 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR FROM: Senior Management Analyst MONTHLY REPORT FOR JUNE- JULY 1991 We are encouraging everyone to come out this Sunday, July 14th at 7:00 a.m. for the 10th Annual Carlsbad Triathlon. We have approximately 1200 participants this year, which is a record breaking figure. In addition to last year's program, we have added a special race for professional athletes, featured at 9:15 a.m. We are happy to report that Michael Bliss who suffered a very serious injury during the last week of May is back to work and doing well. Two of our Tree Crew staff, Mike Barlow and David Ephron, are currently working towards completing coursework for Certified Arborists. The Parks Department has completed the Roberti-Z'Berg Grant improvements to the back section of La Costa Canyon Park's passive area. Parks crews improved the current trail system, planted new trees, upgraded irrigation systems and completed a general clean-up of the area. The Department has received several compliments from area residents. The application for park improvements to a 5-acre area of Hosp Grove has completed a successful evaluation by the State Clearinghouse of Review by Environmental Agencies. The next step in the process will be to obtain a coastal permit before work can begin. Ninety (90) requests for qualifications were sent out to landscape architectural firms interested in designing our future Alta Mira Park. Aha Mira Park will be a 42-acre community park located in the southwest quadrant, directly east of Paseo del Norte, between Palomar Airport Road and Poinsettia Road. Forty-five (45) qualification statements were received. A selection committee made up of three Parks and Recreation Commissioners and City staff will be reviewing the qualifications and selecting a park planning consultant sometime this month. Last fiscal year, the Senior Center provided for a total of 7,082 rides in the Department's van (one-way trips), 35,790 noon lunch meals were served, and over 11,560 home meals were delivered. This Sunday, July 14th, at 1:00 p.m. the Senior Center hosts its Annual Ice Cream Social at Magee Park. The Senior's trip to the Del Mar Fair was an overwhelming success! Our Adult Sports section is currently in mid-season with Coed Volleyball and 3-Person Basketball with more than 50 teams presently participating. Next week signals the beginning of the new Softball season registration. Youth Sports has just completed the 2nd Annual Carlsbad Invitational Basketball Tournament. Out of the 12 San Diego County boys high school teams participating, Carlsbad was the triumphant winner! Ballfield Maintenance has just finished its busiest season of the year. With the conclusion of Youth Baseball/Softball, staff will be doing renovation projects on the fields in anticipation of fall sports beginning in August. /\ V KEITH BEVERL c: City Manager Assistant City Manager Department Heads
