Director's Report Au0ast 12, 1991 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Senior Management Analyst FROM: Stacy Weaver, Recreation Leader II MONTHLY REPORT FOR JULY-AUGUST 1991 The proposed 1991 Parks and Recreation Element to the General Plan will be presented for City Council consideration during the August 20, 1991 meeting. The formation of this Element revision has been several years in the making, and has undergone extensive review by the Parks and Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, City staff and the public. The Carrillo Days benefit event was held Saturday, August 3, at the Safety Center. Thanks to the efforts of the Carrillo Ranch Volunteer Curator, Mrs. Joan Kindle, City staff, as well as several volunteers, the event was considered a big success as it informed the public with regards to the Carrillo Ranch, provided entertainment and generated over $850 in donations and sales to the Carrillo Ranch Trust. In Sports, the adult section just finished the registration period for softball. All 108 spots were filled by teams for the upcoming season. First games start August 12th. The youth section of Sports is wrapping up a successful summer season. More than 150 youngsters participated in basketball and volleyball camps. Congratulations to all of those who made it through. The Youth Surf Soccer Tournament that took place on August 3rd and 4th brought 150 youth teams from Southern California and the southwest United States. The Special Events Department conducted their 13th Annual Bodysurfing Contest on August 10th and llth. The event attracted over 100 participants of all ages. The contest was held at Carlsbad State Beach on Pine Street. Park Planning staff received 45 requests for qualifications from architectural firms interested in designing the future Alta Mira Park. Three finalists were chosen and will be interviewed on September 6th by the Consultant Selection Committee. The selected consultant will begin preparation of the Alta Mira Park Master Plan in October. Tickets for the 4th Annual Senior Center Benefit, sponsored by Gerico's Family Restaurant are still available. They are $5.00 each and may be purchased at the Senior Center. Everyone is welcome, so bring family and friends to help support our seniors. Dinner tickets will be redeemable through October 31st. On September 21, 1991, Gerico's Family Restaurant will also be sponsoring the 5th Annual Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the tournament will again be in support of the Senior Center. Entry fees are $35.00 which includes a buffet dinner and prizes. Tee off is at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Hurry and clean up your clubs, and we'll see you on the course! Lastly, the new fall Recreation brochure is complete. It will be mailed out to all Carlsbad residents on August 15th and 16th.
