TITLE: DIRECTOR'S REPORT (INFO) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept and file. ITEM EXPLANATION: Refer to attached Director's Report August-September 1991. EXHIBIT: 1. Director's Report September 10, 1991 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR FROM: Senior Management Analyst MONTHLY REPORT FOR AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 1991 On August 20, 1991, the City Council was presented with the 1991 Parks and Recreation Element. After staff presentation and Council discussion, the Element was unanimously adopted by the Council. This Element replaces the 1982 Parks and Recreation Element which was used as a basic foundation upon which the 1991 Element was formulated. The Element will now be incorporated within the City's overall General Plan which will soon undergo intensive public review and updating. After staff presentation to the City Council regarding Magnolia acquisition/development, staff is currently evaluating and assessing several park enhancement opportunities within the northwest quadrant including the master planning of Hosp Grove and recreational opportunities relating to the south shore of the Buena Vista Lagoon extending from the Duck Feeding area to the east and westerly to the Pacific Ocean. The establishment of a Community Facilities District for the northwest quadrant to provide for additional recreational enhancement is also being assessed and will return to the Council for further consideration during late September, early October. Our 2nd Annual Volunteer Recognition Picnic is being held at Magee Park on Friday, September 20th at 5:00 PM. Volunteers, with one guest are admitted free, additional quests are $6.00 each. Deadline to R.S.V.P. is September 16, 1991 at 434-2825. Live entertainment is being provided. The Adult Sports section is in the midst of season-ending playoffs in both 3-Person Basketball and Coed-Volleyball. Forty teams in these sports will be battling for championship trophies over the next 2 weeks. The Youth Sports division is preparing for both fall cross country and registration for Youth Basketball. More than 600 youngsters are expected for both programs. Ballfield Maintenance has been fine tuning both Stagecoach and Safety Center in preparation for fall Hardball competition. Youth from both north and south Carlsbad will be utilizing the fields. Tickets for the 4th Annual Senior Center Benefit, sponsored by Gerico's Family Restaurant are still available. They are $5.00 each and may be purchased at the Senior Center. Everyone is welcome, so bring family and friends to help support our seniors. Dinner tickets will be redeemable through October 31st. On September 21, 1991, Gerico's Family Restaurant will also be sponsoring the 5th Annual Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the tournament will again be in support of the Senior Center. Entry fees are $35.00 which includes a buffet dinner and prizes. Tee off is at 7:30 AM on Saturday. Hurry and clean up your clubs, and we'll see you on the course! The Annual Coastal Clean-Up day will be on Saturday, September 21, 1991. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, Coastweeks is a national event focusing on the beauty, diversity, value and preservation of coastal resources. Each volunteer will receive a canvas tote bag, free admission to Sea World that day, which includes a special party inside the park for all Clean- Up Volunteers courtesy of I LOVE A CLEAN SAN DIEGO. In Carlsbad, the clean-up begins at 9:00 AM at both the Tamarack State Beach parking lot and the Agua Hedionda Lagoon (Bayshore Drive public access area). Volunteers we need you! Complete results for the 1991 10th Anniversary Triathlon are currently available as well as Triathlon T-Shirts. The results are available at the following locations: • Fleet Feet Triathlete of Solana Beach • Harding Community Center • Stagecoach Community Center • Calavera Community Center The T-Shirts will be available at all the Carlsbad Community Centers beginning Monday, September 9, 1991. The cost will be $10.00 per shirt and the sizes on hand will be Medium, Large, X-Large, XX-Large. A video of the Triathlon has been made available through the Carlsbad City Library. The cost is $.50 to check out the video for 2 days of viewing. "Seventy-five dancers from the Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department showed their talents on stage at the Dance Caravan competition at Disneyland Hotel. Instructor Michelle Alspaw led her Parks and Recreation dancers through several winning numbers. Cherie Colburn placed second in the ll-to-12 year old ballet category, and Rene Hasan captured third place in the 9-to-10 year old character dance division. Both Carlsbad Dance Centre and Parks and Recreation dancers were chosen to be Dance Caravan Kids, a select group of young people who will travel throughout the United States and Canada with the 1992 Summer Dance Caravan Tour." On August 18, Kendo student Elaine Collins placed 2nd at the 51st Nissei Wiek Kendo competition, one of the largest in the state, at the Nissei-Honganji Temple in downtown Los Angeles. Elaine was competing against participants from neighboring states, Canada, even Japan. Elaine is a third generation Japanese American. She practices Kendo with the Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department under the instruction of Ted Mason. Classes are taught every Sunday. Call 434-2833 for more information.
