MONTHLY REPORT FOR OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 1991
Volunteers at the Carlsbad Senior Center delivered over one-hundred (100) Thanksgiving
Day meals to homebound seniors. Fruitbaskets were also provided as part of this holiday
good will. Two-hundred and twenty (200) Thanksgiving meals were served to seniors at the
Center on the eve of Thanksgiving Day. The Senior Center is also planning to serve a
Christmas Dinner at the Center on December 24th. The second anniversary of the Senior
Center opening will soon take place with weeklong festivities featuring a quilt program for
Casa de Amparo youth, a Senior life writing program, a free dance and of course an
anniversary cake.
Adults Sports just finished registration for volleyball and basketball. The section is
anticipating 24 coed volleyball teams and 18 men's basketball teams to participate in the
winter season. The ballfield maintenance staff is accelerating its operations as it approaches
the lull in sports activities during the holiday season. Much of the maintenance and
rehabilitation projects on the playfields are conditioning baseball and softball.
The Youth Sports section begins its basketball season with practice games scheduled for
Saturday, December 14th. The Youth league this year consists of approximately 60 teams
with eight to ten participants on each team and spans grades 3-12. This is perhaps our most
popular youth program, and the record number of participants this year is well reflective of
that. On December 6th, the Harding Street Community Center was full of rose-lipped
maidens and light-footed lads as the Special Events Division catered to the community's
junior high school aged youth as they staged the annual Youth Winter Dance. Over 250
youngsters were in attendance.
In the Recreation division, the Harding Center is busy accepting priority resident mail-in
registration. Walk-in, drop-off, and phone-in registration begins Monday, December 16th.
The Center is offering 86 various classes and 20 daytrips. With the exception of gym, tap,
jazz, and ballet classes, all classes offered are open enrollment. The Winter/Spring (January
through May) season is on its way. For additional information on upcoming activities and
classes, check out our new Winter/Spring Recreation Brochure!
During the December 3, 1991 City Council meeting, the Alta Mira design contract was
awarded to Dike Landscape architects of San Diego. They will begin preparation of the
Park Master Plan immediately.
The Parks and Recreation Department would like to extend our sincerest hopes that each
and everyone has/a very merry, safe, and joyous holiday season.
ITH BEVERLY
