DIRECTOR'S REPORT/MAY - JUNE, 1992
The golf course Steering Committee recently met to review the status of the Lake
Calavera Municipal Golf Course Development. Pending completion of the city's Habitat
Management Plan which addresses the anticipated listing of the gnatcatcher on the
Federal Government's Endangered Species List, further development of the golf course
has been put on hold.
During recent Budget Review with the Finance department and City Manager's Office,
the Recreation Fee Supported division was given the opportunity to increase their
operating budget by approximately $72,000 above the initial submittal. The increased
funding will generate between $82,000 and $100,000 in additional revenues and provide
for an increased number of Recreation Enrichment Classes, Special Events and Sports
Programming.
Congratulations to Robin Bettin, Recreation Supervisor II and past President of The
California Parks and Recreation Society District XII, San Diego Chapter, on her successful
completion of a Masters Degree program through the University of Redlands. Robin
recently completed her course studies and will soon receive her Masters Degree in Arts
and Management.
Triathlon applications are currently available for one of Carlsbads Premier Special Events.
This year a new division is being introduced, it is the Youth and Senior Wheel Chair
Division. The Triathlon will be held July 12th with the Tri-Fair being held the previous
day, July 11th at the Senior Center. Participants are expected to top the 1,500 mark.
The entry deadline is July 1st, so whether your a pro-elite, moderate competitor or just
want to finish (like me) and have fun, complete your application now and avoid the rush.
The Awards Banquet this year will be held at Cannon Park and volunteers are still needed
and would be greatly appreciated. Contact Jill Prichard at 434-2835 for further info.
28,500 Recreation Brochures were recently mailed to homes in Carlsbad. The new
summer program promises to provide you or your family members a number of fantastic
recreation classes, programs or special events to participate in. This summer's mailing
was the largest yet in the history of the department. Pick up a copy (if you haven't
received one yet) from any of the City's Community Centers or Administration Office, and
remember Take time to recreate - it's one of lifes necessities!
The Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation/San Diego Chapter held their
Annual Youth Track Meet on May 9th. Over 1,000 participants (50 youngsters from
Carlsbad) competed at Balboa Stadium. Although this event culminates the track and
field season for many, a number of participants will proceed to Regional Districts for
further fun and competition.
An intra-city grass Volleyball League for City Employees is currently registering for sign-
ups until May 22nd. Contact Doug Landin at 434-2858 for further information. In
addition, a City Bowling League is also being renewed after a number of years of
dormancy. The League, once again, promises to provide a lot of fun and camaraderie.
Call Jim Bradshaw at 434-2841 for more information. rVUTDTTLAHlblI
"Rancho De Los Quiotes" - The Carrillo Ranch was placed on the National Register of
Historic places on March 31, 1992. The National Register Program in California is
administered by the State Office of Historic Preservation. Placement on the National
Register affords a property the honor of inclusion in the nation's official list of cultural
resources worthy of preservation and provides a degree of protection from adverse
effects resulting from federally funded or licensed projects. Registration provides a
number of incentives for preservation of historic properties, including special building
codes to facilitate the restoration of historic structures, and certain tax advantages.
Carl Pope, the Aquatics Supervisor, was instrumental in facilitating the Lifeguard
Academy, held April 30th at the Carlsbad Swim Complex. The "Academy" graduated 25
perspective lifeguards which were fortunate enough to have been recently hired or are
currently enlisted in a lifeguard "pool" which aquafic employers throughout the county can
use to fill needed positions for lifeguards as summer draws near.
