DIRECTORS REPORT FOR JUNE - JULY
During the May 26th City Council meeting, staff presented the Beach Lifeguard Request
for consideration. By a 3 -1 vote the Council recommended to deny the request for the
City to fund a lifeguard program. However, staff was directed to pursue Legislative
assistance to provide for a lifeguard program, and consider to fund a program in the
future if the State of California would enter into a partnership for services with shared
liability.
The Park Maintenance Division recently completed an expansion of the horseshoe
facility at Holiday Park. The project was completed at the request of, and in
cooperation with volunteers of the Carlsbad Horseshoe Club - the "Flipfloppers".
Dedication ceremonies were held Thursday, May 28th. The "Flipfloppers" are currently the
reigning champs in a division that competes throughout the county. The expansion now
affords them the ability to hold champion tournament play at this facility.
The Community Garage Sale was held June 6th at Holiday Park. The Special Events
division sold 92 individual vender booths at $25 each, which is to date, a record number
of participant vendors. It is estimated that between 3 - 4 thousand bargain hunters took
advantage of the swap meet style event.
Don't forget the 11th Annual Triathlon which will be held on July 12th. Over 1,500
participants are expected to register, so get your applications in early. Volunteers are still
being sought - call Special Events, Jill Prichard at 434-2835. Even if you don't complete
or volunteer, it's also a great spectator event!
Congratulations to Larry Nichols of the Park Maintenance Division on 'his recent
promotion to Park Maintenance Worker III. Larry now assumes a lead position of
maintenance crews which service park sites and landscape responsibilities for other city
facilities as well. Although his service with the City started 15 years ago with Building
Maintenance, Larry has been performing his services with the Parks Department for the
last 12 years.
The community Swim Complex will host end of the school year swim parties for the
graduating 6th grade classes of Hope Elementary School on June 16th and Magnolia
Elementary School on June 17th. Pre-summer staff training for summer Lifeguards will
be held June 19th and June 20th in preparation for yet another hectic but safe Summer
Aquatic Season. Additional training classes will be held for Basic Water Safety,
COO
Emergency Water Safety, and Lifeguard Instructor. These classes are offered to the
public - call 434-2860 for confirmation of time and dates. A record 300 mail in
registration forms for the 1st of three (3) summer sessions offering a number of swim
instruction classes have been received to date by the department.
The Senior Division will be hosting the Annual Trip to the Del Mar Fair on June 25th for
"Senior Day". The recently established self-defense class is being enthusiastically
attended by a number of participants who are enjoying themselves while sharpening their
self-defense skills, so fair warning to would be senior muggers and purse snatchers -
BEWARE. Another new program being offered is a Spinal Health Screening to be held
June 15th and finally for those busy Seniors at the Center, a newly formed "Friday
Discussion" group offers interesting discussions, insight, opinions and old fashion
expertise on a variety of topics ranging from international to national and local interests.
The Enrichment Class program has three recitals coming soon. The Spring Recital
"Festival of Talent" - Thursday June 11th, at 7:00 p.m.. Over 200 participants representing
the learned talents from a number of Enrichment Classes will perform their skills. A
dance recital will be held Friday, June 19th at 7:00 p.m. and June 20th at 2:00 p.m. by
over 250 kids from the "Dance for Children" program. These dance recitals will feature
performances by the Tap, Jazz, and Ballet programs. Performances will be held at the
Cultural Arts center and admission is free. Please call Gail Watts or the Harding Street
Community Center at 434-2833 for further information.
