DIRECTOR'S REPORT/JUNE - JULY, 1992
The Youth Sports section is preparing for summer sports camps. Approximately 30
youths ages 12-17 will be participating in a Basketball Camp on July 13 - 17 at

youths ages 8-11 will be attending the basketball camp at Calavera Hills Community
Center.
On July 12, 1992 Carlsbad Triathlon will have 1,003 individuals along with 59 relay
teams participate in our premier special event.
The Senior Division will be hosting it's popular ice cream social July 12 from 1 :30 - 3:30
p.m. at McGee Park. Ice cream is offered for that old fashioned price of 250 a scoop.
Senior Angler's are heading out to sea on August 1 8 and the Senior Safari will be
touring Knotts Berry Farm August 27.
The request for Batting Cages at Stagecoach Park will be considered at the Tuesday,
August 14, City Council meeting.
Carrillo Ranch Subcommittee will be meeting on July 31 , at 9:30 a.m. in the City Council
Chambers to discuss a new plan for park dedication.
On Wednesday, July 8, 1992 staff attended the Coastal Commission hearing in Long
Beach regarding the time lock gate permit request. After a coastal staff report and a
presentation by staff and several homeowners, the Commission voted 8-1 to uphold the
staff's recommendation to not allow the City to install the time lock gates on the verticle
accessways at Grand, Beech and Ocean.
The Coastal Commission felt the additional three gates would virtually close all night time
recreational activities along the north beach of Carlsbad. The Commission suggested the
City use other means to solve the homeowners problems like, lighting, noise detractors
and additional police patrol.
