DIRECTORS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
With the recent adoption of the California State Budget, the City has had to re-evaluate
their budget which was adopted in June with a full understanding that it was subject to
change contingent upon the State's action. As a result, the Parks and Recreation
Department has been evaluating ways in which to further reduce our operating budget
or generate additional fees which would equate to a 7% reduction in the previously
adopted budget. While some services and programs will have a definite impact, facilities
are anticipated to remain open at this time.
The Carlsbad Senior Center is gearing up for the 6th Annual Gerico's Restaurant/
Carlsbad Senior Center' Benefit Golf Tournament. All proceeds from the tourney
benefit the Senior Center and Gerico's will hold a dinner following the day's tournament.
The date for the festivities is Saturday, October 3rd. Tickets to the dinner are available
for a $5.00 donation and may be picked up at the Senior Center.
Agua Hedionda Lagoon staff report the peak season has just ended on the lagoon and
that the season was moderately busy with no serious incidents.
The Carlsbad Swim Complex has just completed a very busy summer season. July and
August of this year produced a 13% increase in revenues, a 16% increase in
attendance. Fall swimming lessons have begun at the pool and a busy schedule of
Carlsbad Lancer Water Polo matches are slated in the next many weeks. The complex
will also play host to the North County High School Water Polo Tournament on
September 25th and September 26th.
5-person basketball enrollment has just begun for the Adult Sports Section. Softball
in Men's/Women's/Co-ed Divisions is in it's second week as more than 100 see action
weekly. The Youth Sports Section begins it's busiest season of the year, Youth
Basketball. More than 600 youngsters will go through evaluation sessions at Calavera
Hills and Stagecoach Parks in mid to late October. First games begin Saturday,

The always popular "Kidz Club" returns for another year as youngsters return to school.
Children, ages 6-13 may participate in a variety of activities at Pine School and Calavera

oversees this energetic, creative program as well as the equally creative "Coastal Clean-
Up" especially with the addition of the First Annual "Environmental Awareness Expo"
scheduled for Saturday, September 19th, the Expo, in conjunction with the clean-up, will
help educate citizens about the fragile ecosystem that is our California Coast.
Just completed is the painting renovation at Harding Community Center. The full
exterior has been painted and the Recreation Hall and Auditorium interiors are next on
tap.
By the weekend of September 19th, all can expect to see a bit more of City Hall as tree
trimming will be completed. Sculpting and trimming are currently being performed on
weekends. The Parks Division coordinated the recent volunteer re-landscaping of the
"Split Pavilion". More than 25 volunteers helped plant more than 1,000 grass-type plants
both donated and purchased by the City.
