DIRECTOR'S REPORT/OCTOBER - NOVEMBER, 1992
The Autumn Garage Sale is slated for October 24 in Holiday Park. Scheduled for the
hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this event is the second such event this year and is in response
to the wildly popular event held annually in June. And speaking of wildly popular, the
Special Events Section is holding the annual Halloween Carnival, Friday, October 30 at
Calavera Hills Community Park. The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Volunteers
are still needed. Please call 434-2989 if interested.
Men's 5-Man Basketball is just beginning. 26 teams will be vying for championship
trophies on Tuesdays and Thursday nights at each of Carlsbad's two gymnasiums at
Calavera and Stagecoach Parks.
Youth Sports personnel find themselves at the busiest juncture of their year as the Youth
Basketball season prepares to go into full swing. Player evaluation sessions are
scheduled for October 17 at Calavera Hills and October 24 at Stagecoach. Times are 8
a.m. to 2 p.m. and offer the opportunity for the trained eyes of Carlsbad staff to evaluate
the skill level of each youngster in the program, so that teams can be split evenly thus
encouraging fun, and equal competition among youngsters. Coach meetings are slated
for November 9 and 10, practices begin in late November, and games begin Saturday,
December 5.
The annual Cross Country meet is scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 10 a.m. at
Stagecoach Park. Any youngster born during the years 1978 through 1986 is eligible to
compete, and by competing, each youngster qualifies for the County Championships in
San Diego the following weekend.
Saturday, October 17 marks the day our Senior Center celebrates their World Series
"Take Me Out To The Ball Game" event. All festivities will center around the big screen
and the World Series action that takes place that day. Popcorn, hot dogs, and sodas will
be available to make all participants get the feel of really being at the ballpark!
In addition to ball games on the big screen, active seniors can now enjoy Thursday p.m.
movies on the big screen. All this thanks to the arrival of the long awaited video
projector to the Senior Center.
Harding Community Center is proud to announce the most recent winners of the part-
time employee of the quarter. During the period of April-June, Andy Meade, the Adult
Sports Assistant Coordinator was the Recreation Section's winner. Andy is an integral
part of the Adult Sports Section, assisting Doug Landin in every facet of Adult Sports
League management.

During the period of July-September, we are proud to announce dual winners. They are
Rosemary Cruger and Kathy Kairdolf. Both Kathy and Rosemary serve as the
department's word process operators. Their value to the department goes well beyond
their titles. In addition to doing all word processing and most of the section's typing,
Rosemary and Kathy help coordinate much of the brochure material, assist with the
creation of department flyers, and thankfully help staff with proper grammar in memos
and other official paperwork. Kudos to all 3 fine staff members receiving awards.
The Xeriscape project is nearing final design plans. It is expected the project will go to
bid shortly.
Alta Mira Park plans recently went before the Planning Commission for approval of the
Conditional Use Permit. After Commission discussion and review, the C.U.P. gained
approval. Discussion had centered around the time that lights must be off at the facility.
Final vote by the Commission set the time at 10 p.m.
Following the external and internal painting that Harding Community Center underwent
last month, an upgrade of the facility plumbing is underway this month.
