DIRECTOR'S REPORT/DECEMBER, 1992
The Adult Sports Section is in the completion stage of the Fall 92 Softball Season. The
season has been a great success with over 100 men's, women's and coed teams
participating. Their next programs begin in February as softball begins again, and the
next season for men's basketball starts.
Youth Sports has just begun their Youth Basketball Season as 68 teams with close to
700 youngsters are participating at both Calavera Hills and Stagecoach Community
Centers. Kids ages 8-18 will continue this season through March.
The Aquatic Section reports the pool will be officially closed as of December 19.
During the short period of the closure, the pool's fiberglass shell will be refinished and
major facility maintenance will occur.
Facility Staff at the Harding Community Center have just finished the painting of the
community center's Recreation Hall. With the supervision of the City's
Utilities/Maintenance and Recreation staff accomplished this project in the short span of
5 days and impacted none of the Department's classes.
Special Events has just held their Annual Winter Dance at the Harding Community
Center. More than 150 Junior High youngsters attended the dance. Staff are looking for
used golf clubs. Donations are now being accepted at both Holiday House and the
Harding Community Center. These clubs will be used by kids during the Youth Golf
Clinic in February at the Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course.
Parks personnel have completed the task of installing the downtown's Holiday
decorations. They have also just completed the routine of fireproofing all the City's
department Christmas trees. Parks, with the assistance of Gian Lauro and the Harding
Community Center staff also assisted in the Tree Lighting Ceremony downtown. Staff
erected the tree, helped decorate, and provided tables, chairs, and clean-up assistance
at the ceremony itself.
The La Costa Youth Organization recently had the dedication ceremony for their new
Batting Cage Complex at Stagecoach Park. The actual construction of the facility
begins in late January.

Our lovely Carlsbad Senior Center is particularly resplendent during this holiday season.
Decorations are up, and two beautiful trees highlight the center. Thanks go to the Target
Company and F.H.P. for donating the firs. Billiard lights have just been installed over
the tables in the handsome Billiard Room. Finally, Sue Spickard reports that their staff
has grown by one with the addition of Terri House. Terri will serve as a part-time
administrative assistant at the Center.
On behalf of the Carlsbad Parks and Recreation staff, we wish you all a very safe and
happy holiday season, with best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year.
