DIRECTOR'S REPORT/JANUARY, 1993
Congratulations to the Recreation Department's part-time employees of the quarter
(October - December 1992). They are Jeff Briskin - Harding Street Community Center,
Scott Peterson - Calavera Community Center, Aimee Smith - Special Events. Thank
you for your excellent contributions to the City of Carlsbad Recreation Department.
Park Maintenance Crews have been extremely busy in recent days clearing and
cleaning debris left as a result of the latest series of storms which have hit San Diego
County. Although the storms have wreaked havoc to area streets and landscapes, the
good news is of course that the drought situation has improved significantly.
The Senior Center will be hosting a Super Bowl party on January 31,1993. In addition
to viewing the Super Bowl on wide screen TV in the auditorium, refreshments will also
be available. Hot dogs, popcorn and soda will be free to all those Seniors who attend.
The game begins at 3:00 p.m. so get there early and enjoy some pre-game comraderie.
The Swim Complex has been closed in recent weeks due to necessary renovation work.
Contractors are currently at work (between rain storms) to apply new tile lane lines and
apply a fiberglass coating to the inside of the pool. The fiberglass method is in-lieu of
and considerably more effective than replastering the pool surface. The result will yield
a brand new appearance for the pool and provide much needed restoration and
preventive maintenance to the interior of the pool. Barring excessive delay due to rain,
construction should be completed and the pool should be reopened in early February.
The Special Events division is gearing up for the fourth Annual Youth Golf Clinic. This
popular event will be held February 27th at Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course. Local youth
receive professional instruction, are hosted by the department to refreshments, prizes and
are also provided with golf clubs. The department is seeking the donation of used golf
clubs and additional golf equipment from members of the community - contact 434-2833
if you are able to help.
February 12th will be the date of this year's Annual Junior High School Valentine Dance.
The event will be held at Harding Street Auditorium and typically, as in years past, over
300 fluttering hearts will be dancing the night away.

The Youth Baseball Clinic will be held January 18 - 23 at Calavera Hills Community
Center. The instructional clinic will provide additional knowledge and skill of the sport to
approximately 50 participants, ages 8-13 years. The event this year is most graciously
sponsored by the Fieldstone Co. and Chicks Sporting Goods.
The County wide youth Basketball Tournament will be hosted by the City of Carlsbad
this year. Tournament play will be held at Calavera and Stagecoach gymnasiums with
play off games beginning March 20th and extending through the 21st. In the meantime,
the local youth basketball program is well underway.
The Recreation Department will be accepting registration for all Adult Softball Leagues
beginning February 1st through the 12th. Registration packets must be picked up prior
to the February 12th deadline. The fee for resident teams is $275 and for non-resident
teams the fee will be $335. League fees and rosters are due no later than 4:00 p.m.
February 19th.
The Department is also currently accepting registration for 5 Person Basketball
Leagues. The registration period ends January 23rd. Resident team fees are $230 and
non-resident^ea/ffsa^e $265. Deadline for application is 5:00 p.m. January 29th.
