Director's Report - February 1993. oil March 9, 1993 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Senior Management FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT/MARCH, 1993 Adult Sports The Adult Sports Section reports adult softball league play began the week of March 1. More than 100 teams began competition in more than 15 different leagues throughout Carlsbad. Facilities Gian Lauro reports that Youth Leagues are holding their opening day ceremonies in the next few weeks at area fields. Carlsbad youth baseball opens league play on January 13 at Chase and Brierly fields; Carlsbad youth softball opens on March 20 at Calavera Hills and the La Costa Youth Organization begins their season at Stagecoach on March 20. Good luck to all the youngsters. Gian also adds that the Girl Scouts of San Diego County just finished their annual distribution of cookies adjacent to the Harding Community Center. During a 2 day period, more than 100,000 cookies were handed out to local scouts. Hi-Noon Rotary's recent "Walk for Mankind" drew more than 300 people. As always, Carlsbad's Holiday Park served as headquarters and start and finish for this outstanding event. Youth Sports Robin Bettin states that playoffs have just been concluded in the youth basketball program. Youth competed at both Stagecoach and Calavera Hills Parks for the coveted top position. Champions were crowned in grades 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 and high school. These top teams will be competing for County Championship laurels on the weekend of March 20 and 21 at North County area gyms in tournament action sponsored by the City of Carlsbad. Seniors Just a reminder, belly dancing demonstration and class is coming up on March 29 at 1:00 p.m. for the fee of just $1.00 you can receive an overview of the art, watch a demonstration and participate! The Senior Center will be the setting for two exciting EXHIBIT 1 Director's Report Page Two events in the upcoming weeks. A ping pong tournament will be staged during the first week of April, and concurrently on April 3, a fashion show for seniors, by seniors, and about seniors will take place. Parks Fred Burnell, Tree Supervisor, reports that crews assisted in the planting of trees at the Stagecoach Park tot lot recently. Seven to eight trees were planted by youngsters under staff supervision to eventually provide shade at the lot. Currently in progress is the installment of a number of new light poles at the Chase Field complex. Under the Parks section supervision, employees of SDG&E are donating their time, equipment, and poles for the youth of Carlsbad. We thank the company for this very generous support to Carlsbad's youth. Aquatics Carl Pope, Aquatic Supervisor, has been busy since the re-opening of the Swim Complex. More than 1 ,000 citizens have used the pool in just this short period of time. Carl says the pool will host three Carlsbad high school meets the month of March. Swim lessons registration have just begun for all ages. Special Events Aimee and Lori Smith report the Annual Egg Hunts are fast approaching on April 10. Hunts will take place at Calavera Hills, Stagecoach, and Holiday Park and thousands of area youngsters will participate. Announcements With the departure of Doug Landin from Adult Sports, Jill Prichard, the Department's ace Special Events/Triathlon Coordinator has moved over to assume responsibility for the area. Never fear, Jill, who will be under the guidance of Supervisor Gail Watts, will still be in charge of the triathlon. An event that has been our trademark of quality over the past several years.
