DIRECTOR'S REPORT/APRIL, 1993
Youth Sports
Robin Bettin has her youth staff preparing for a busy summer as they host four different
sports camps. Two youth basketball and one girls' high school basketball camps are
slated for the summer months. Additionally, a youth volleyball camp will take place. Sites
for these camps are Calavera Hills and Stagecoach Parks.
Stagecoach Park
Robin also adds that new class sessions begin the week of the 20th and that spring
picnic rentals are extremely busy this time of year.
Special Events
Staff has just completed one of their busiest times of the year. Youth Day Camps have
just concluded at both Holiday and Calavera Hills Parks. More than 100 youngsters
enjoyed a week of activities during the holiday break. Special Events staff also just
completed the annual Egg Hunts with more than 2,000 youngsters enjoying the festivities
at three City sites.
Aquatics
Carl Pope reports that the pool remains busy since its recent re-opening. Still on the
schedule are three remaining Carlsbad High School swim meets as well as a Masters
swim meet on April 17th. Spring swim lessons begin the 23rd and 24th. Just completed
is the annual basic lifeguarding class with Carl at the helm as principal instructor.
Scheduled for April 30th, the pool will be the site for "Good Citizens Day" as Hope
Elementary School will be bringing their students who have demonstrated outstanding
citizenship to the pool for a day of festivities.
Seniors
Terri House proclaims the recent Senior Fashion Show a resounding success. More than
100 seniors attended the show as local women escorted by local gentlemen showed off
many attractive styles in outfits. Flowers for the escorts and hostesses were generously
donated by Frazee's and Von's. The Senior Center was standing room only for this great
event.

Terry also adds that a representative from the Audubon Society is scheduled to speak
to interested seniors regarding wildlife and birds that make the local lagoons their home.
This event is slated for late May.
Enrichment Classes
The new brochure is nearly here. Starting May 7 Carlsbad residents should start
receiving their brochures at home. Important dates for registration are listed in the
brochure to offer Carlsbad residents priority registration for the summer. One important
class that Supervisor Gail Watts keynotes is the Child and Infant CPR Class. The class
will be held at Calavera Hills Community Center on Wednesday, May 12.
Adult Sports
Gail reminds everyone that 3-Man Basketball and Coed Volleyball leagues begin in May
and run through September. Registration for these two sports runs from May 10-28.
Spotlight on our Employees
Lori Swenck and Andy Meade were co-winners of the part-time employee of the quarter
for the period of January-March 1993. Lori has just finished an outstanding youth
basketball season while Andy continues great work as the Adult Sports Assistant
Coordinator. Congratulations to both for exemplary work.
