ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for May-June 1993. EXHIBIT; 1. Director's Report - May-June 1993. 16 May 12, 1993 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Senior Management Analyst^ FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT/MAY, 1993 Aquatics Carl Pope reports a busy pool schedule this time of year. W.S.I, certification classes end on May 20th with a record 19 graduates. A.W.S.I. Aid course for the summer's volunteers starts May 15 and goes through the 29th. The Carlsbad High School Swim Team ends their season on the 21st. Carl also forwards the information that registration for mail-in has just begun and June 5 marks the date for walk-in registration at Calavera Hills Community Center. Carl reminds everyone that the pool will be the site of a big United States Swim Federation Meet on June 11, 12 and 13. Carl also states numerous area schools are making the pool their site for year end parties during the beginning of June. Don't forget; the pool will be open Memorial Day, the 31st, from 8:45 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. for lap swim and 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. for recreation and lap swim for holiday goers to enjoy. Carrillo Ranch Film Festival Joan and Alan Kindle have just completed the 2nd Annual Leo Carrillo Film Festival. Scheduled at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center over the last weekend in April, citizens had the opportunity to view a number of Leo's finest moments on the screen as well as view some of the neat memorabilia that is in the Leo Carrillo Ranch archives. The Department thanks the Kindles for their continuing efforts to support this event and the Foundation to preserve Leo Carrillo's Ranch. Facilities Gian Lauro passes on the information that his section has just finished assisting the Arts Department with their 2nd Annual "Mother's Day Festival" at Holiday Park. Early reports point to a successful event with over 500 in attendance. Gian also reports his section assisted with the Annual Spring Street Faire, assisting various groups with their set-up and breakdown in addition to passing out information flyers at the City's booth in the middle of Grand and State. Triathlon Jill Prichard declares the beginning of Triathlon season is imminent. As staff revs up for this exciting annual event, Jill states that Triathlon applications are now available and can be had by calling 434-2856. Volunteers are always needed and much appreciated. To enlist for this exciting event, call Jill at 434-283. 17 EXHIBIT 1 Director's Report Page Two Parks Doug Duncanson says the Xeriscape project at City Hall is proceeding well. The contract has been awarded, and staff is assisting with the boulder placement and turf removal and will be securing the large specimen trees for placement when the contractor begins in approximately 1 week. Special Events Dave Millikan notes the Annual Summer Garage Sale is scheduled for June 5 in Holiday Park. This popular early summer event brings together more than 100 people selling their many articles. Many thousands of people pass through the park on this day! Davtrippers Carmen Lopez enthusiastically says, "we have something for everyone!" Upcoming trips include a Laughlin turnaround on June 5; a San Diego Padres game slated for Friday, June 11; a trip to the Old Globe Theater for the play "Mornings at Seven" a comedy about family life - Sunday June 13; the ever popular Laguna Arts Festival and "Oliver" at Lawrence Welk Theater are trips on the horizon for July. Senior Division In April, over 90 Seniors attended a program entitled: Aging Without Arthritis. 80% of the seniors attended were screened for Vitamin C deficiency. This program focused on measures to prevent arthritis. On Monday, May 17, at 1:00 p.m. the SWINGIN' ROCKERETTES will perform in the Carlsbad Senior Center Auditorium. This dance troupe consists of eight senior ladies who live in the North County area. Their repertoire consists of tap dancing, can can and jazz. The SWINGIN1 ROCKERETTES have been featured on P.M. Magazine and on Seniors Speak Out on Public Television. This group placed 2nd in the Professional Division of the Annual Senior Talent Show in San Diego which had over 100 participants.
