TITLE: DIRECTOR'S REPORT (INFO) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept and file. ITEM EXPLANATION; Attached is the Director's Report for June-July, 1993. EXHIBITS; 1. Director's Report June-July, 1993. 008 June 15, 1993 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Senior Management Analyst FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT - JUNE, 1993 Instructional Classes Harding, Stagecoach, and Calavera Hills Community Centers are now connected via a computer network for activity registration. Residents can now register for any program at each of the three community centers. This will be of special help to families that participate in programs at more than one location. The Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department will be center stage at the Del Mar Fair as students from our intermediate/advanced clogging class will be performing on June 27th from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Participants from the department's ballet, tap, and jazz classes will also be performing on Friday, July 2nd from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Second session classes start the week of July 25. Don't miss out! The 6th Annual Children's Dance Recital is scheduled for Saturday, June 19th and Sunday, June 20th at 2:00 p.m. at Valley Jr. High School. Slated for the new multi-use room, the performance will showcase the talents of over 250 children in our ballet, tap, and jazz classes. Davtripoers Highlights for the upcoming month include: * Pageant of the Masters - Lagiina Beach * "Oliver" at Lawrence Welk Village * LaJolla Scripps Aquarium and Museum Adult Sports Adult Softball leagues are wrapping up their playoffs currently even as 3-on-3 basketball and Coed Volleyball get underway. Twenty-four basketball and twelve volleyball teams begin action in mid-June. Youth Sports The annual high school basketball tournament gets underway on June 24 and runs through the 27th. Scheduled for Stagecoach Park, the tournament brings together 11 San Diego teams as well as the exciting prospect of a New Jersey team competing for the first time. 009 EXHIBIT 1 Parks The month of June signals fertilization and aeration for all Carlsbad athletic fields. Crews will be out propping the fields to produce a beautiful tint of green as fall sports approach. Senior Citizens Center The Senior Center held a Rubber Stamp Workshop on June 8. Fifteen people learned the techniques of this new paper art and took home their own custom designed bookmarks and greeting cards. On June 12 a mini-bus took 18 seniors to the Museum of San Diego History and then for a picnic lunch in Balboa Park. After lunch everyone had free time to enjoy the sights and sounds of Balboa Park which included a native American Indian festival featuring costumes and dances. The Seniors are hosting a Senior Amateur Contest on June 16th. They will be singing and dancing to everything from Broadway Show Tunes to original pieces of music. There will be prizes donated from See's Candy awarded to 1st and 2nd place winners in each category. A Western Days Barbecue lunch is planned for July 2nd, and on July 11 the Seniors are holding their Annual Ice Cream Social at 1:30 p.m. in Magee Park. Miscellaneous Robin Bettin forwards the information that June 14 was the re-opening of Stagecoach Park's gym and activity room. These facilities were recently refinished and look bright and shiny with their new summer coats. Gian Lauro recently orchestra* 1 the Heritage Hall Plaque Dedication Ceremony. In attendance were a number Jfty officials as well as Carlsbad Historical Society members. Kudos to Gian for a job well done! Gail Watts was an integral part of the just completed "Country Affair." The event was held at Holiday Park and nearly 50 groups staged booths at the park. Thousands of people were treated to a day of entertainment, food, and crafts in this event whose proceeds benefited the Carlsbad Boys' and Girls' Club and the Carlsbad Girls' Club. One final note that excites the department is the promotion of Jill Prichard to Recreation Supervisor I. Jill has worked long and hard to make our Annual Triathlon a resounding success.
