Director's Report - July 1993 008 July 13, 1993 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Senior Management Analyst FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT - JULY 1993 Adult Sports Jill Prichard reports that packets for Softball registration become available the week of July 19. Teams may register during the subsequent 3-week period, and Jill expects well over 100 teams to compete during the fall season. Youth Sports The youth sports section reports a resounding success in the recently completed High School Basketball Tournament held at Stagecoach Park. Teams from throughout San Diego County and one team from New Jersey vied for the championship eventually captured by Torrey Pines High School. All the young men received a tournament t-shirt and thanks to the efforts of the youth staff, merchandise and prizes from numerous sponsors were given to each participant. Congratulations for another great event run in the youth sports section. Aquatics Carl Pope provides plenty of interesting information from the Aquatics Complex as staff experiences their busiest time of year. During the first three weeks of the summer session (June 21 - July 12), total pool revenues topped $17,000. Recreation swim accounted for more than $13,000 of this revenue. Carl states more than 3,900 people have enjoyed rec. swim in this period and a total of 64 classes have been staged in just 3 weeks. Carl somehow finds the time nonetheless to teach safety training classes for teens and adults scheduled to begin July 22. Carl also reminds all that the 2nd registration for swim lessons is imminent so don't miss out! Parks Jerry Rodriguez relays the information that Parks staff will be assisting the Arts Department personnel in preparing Magee Park for three upcoming installments of the "Jazz in the Parks" series. Personnel make sure the park is clean and assemble the stage for the Arts Department. Harding Community Center staff as with Calavera Hills and Stagecoach staff at their sites, help breakdown at Magee Park and insure the park is left clean at night's end. Special Events Special events staffer Marc Beasley reports the 15th Annual Bodysurfing Championships are slated for August 14th and 15th at Carlsbad State Beach. Expected participation is 200 with 2,000-3,000 spectators looking on. Nearly 20 major sponsors form the - 009 EXHIBIT backbone of this event, and Marc says the section has been getting calls from around the state inquiring about the event. Special events also looks forward to "Kidz Camps" and a Tennis Camp throughout the month of August with more than 250 youngsters enjoying the summer festivities. Classes The next session of summer classes starts the week of July 25. Sign-ups are now being taken for over 200 classes! Gail Watts and Betsy Kennedy encourage anyone interested to call their local community center. One highlighted class is the ever popular "Quilt in a Day" one-day workshop scheduled for Saturday, August 28. Sign up soon - spaces fill fast. Davtrippers Gail's highlight trip of the period is the annual trip to Laguna Beach to enjoy the unique "Pageant of the Masters." date for this adventure is Friday, August 6. Triathlon Event coordinator, Jill Prichard reports the 12th annual event to be an unqualified success as 1,041 athletes participated on Sunday, July 11. 619 male and 222 female athletes performed individually. 200 relay members also vied for honors on a beautiful Sunday morning. Top finishers included the following: * Pro male: Dave Pier - Del Mar Time: 1:08:26 * Pro Female: Cherie Touchette - Encinitas Time: 1:18:21 * Male Amateur: Eric Burgan - Carlsbad Time: 1:09:32 * Female Amateur: Elizabeth Bulman - San Diego Time: 1:20:05 177 volunteers helped in the event with competitors from the ages of 13 to 74 enjoying one of sports' most challenging competitions. Seniors The Senior Center hosted a special barbecue lunch on July 2nd to kick off the July 4th weekend. Over 270 hamburgers were cooked and lunches prepared as the senior event was staged to a western theme. On July 11th, the seniors held the Annual Ice Cream Social at Magee park. With approximately 300 in attendance, over 600 scoops of ice cream were served. This seems Hke a great group of people that really know how to party!
