DIRECTOR'S REPORT - AUGUST 1993
Youth Sports
Robin Bettin reports their section is in the midst of a very successful Youth Sports Camp
period. Basketball camps have seen 50, 35 and 25 youngsters participating during a
three week period and 40 youngsters enjoying the annual edition of summer Volleyball
Camp.
Adult Sports
Jill Prichard forwards the information that all adult softball leagues have filled, as 96 teams
begin first action the week of August 16 and continue through Thanksgiving. 5-person
basketball registration starts the week of September 6 with 24 teams expected to engage
in the full-court action. Finally, current volleyball and 3-person basketball teams wind up
their playoffs in early September.
Special Events
Dave Millikan states that the Special Events Section is especially busy engaged in a
variety of events. This section recently conducted weeklong "Kidz Club" summer camps
at Calavera Hills and Holiday Parks which saw more than 120 youngsters participating
in weeklong sessions of crafts, games, sports and the appearance of guest speakers.
The annual Youth Tennis Camp will be held at Carlsbad High School courts August 23-
27. This free camp is open to youngsters ages 6-12 and is staged by area tennis
teachers who donate their time to instruct the attendees in the basic of tennis.
Volunteers are needed to help in the annual "I Love A Clean Carlsbad Day." Slated for
Saturday, October 2, from 8:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m., each participant will receive a free pass
to San Diego's Sea World for their efforts in cleaning Agua Hedionda Lagoon and
Carlsbad State Beach. Further information or volunteer inquiries can be had by calling
the Special Events Office at 434-2989.
The 15th Annual Bodysurfing Championships will make a big splash on Saturday and
Sunday, August 14 and 15. Scheduled for Carlsbad State Beach at Pine Street, more
than 200 bodysurfers from around the state and elsewhere will vie for trophies and more
than $5,000 worth of prizes donated by area merchants. This is a record number of
donations thanks to Marc Beasley and the rest of the fine Special Events Section.

Seniors
Terri House reports the eagerly awaited arrival of the "Sunshine Players" to the Carlsbad
Senior Center on Thursday, September 23. The troupe of seniors will entertain the
assembled with a variety of 5-10 minute skits and vignettes read from scripts. Showtime
is 1:00 p.m.
Part-Timers
The Recreation Section is proud to announce their selections for part-time employees for
the quarter ending in June. Awarded the honors for outstanding service in their areas
or community centers were the following:
