DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Parks Division
Doug Duncanson, the Park Superintendent, is representing the Parks and Recreation
Department in assisting the Planning Department and Barrio representatives in efforts to
develop a Master Plan for this unique area within Carlsbad. Both landscape improvement
issues as well as recreational enhancement activities have been the subject of discussion at
neighborhood meetings and will be addressed in the master planning process.
Volunteers from the City's Hiring Hall were responsible for the savings of several hundred
dollars as they provided the clean up and removal of sand from the medians along
Carlsbad Boulevard during the months of September and October.
Park Maintenance personnel are assisting the downtown merchants in preparation of the
Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony which will be held on Sunday, December 5th.
Although the tree lights will be turned on at 5:00 p.m., Santa Glaus will be there for the
children to enjoy a little earlier. Refreshments will also be available as we begin the holiday
season.
Adult Sports
The Adult Sports Division is in full swing as 96 teams in the current softball season approach
the final playoff games which will wrap up season play around the Thanksgiving holiday.
Presently, a full court press is on as 24 teams are competing in the Full-Court Basketball
League. Over 130 individuals are involved in season play.
Youth Sports
The Youth Basketball program is once again this year (as always) a resounding success
as more than 650 youngsters registered to play. 67 teams will be created in a variety of age
groups ranging from 8 to 17 years of age.
Aquatics
The Carlsbad High School Water Polo Team culminates season play on November 12th. At
the conclusion of their season, additional pool use hours will be available for public lap
swimming. As winter and cool weather approaches, new insulation pool blankets will soon
be in use to insure efficient retention of pool heat and the satisfaction and comfort of the
community swimmers.
Daytrippers
Over 235 participants (18 years and older) have registered for a variety of excursions during
the fall. The following December trips are still available - "Glory of Christmas" (Crystal
Cathedral), Piecemakers of Costa Mesa, "Christmas Fantasy" (Huntington Harbour Cruise),
Pasadena Rose Parade. Contact 434-2988 for further information. . .
Enrichment Classes
Approximately 3800 participants are enjoying a variety of enrichment classes as over 903
classes are currently in progress. Partakers of these classes enjoy and learn recreation
skills in the areas of crafts, dance, preschool, sports, martial arts, and fitness. The last
monthly session begins December 1st. Check out the Fall Recreation Brochure . .. there's
fun for everyone!
Special Events
The Halloween Haunted Mansion and Carnival held on October 29th at Calavera Hills
Community Center was a tremendous success. Over 1,000 participants went through the
scariest haunted house yet, which was doubled in size this year. The carnival had more than
750 ghouls in attendance.
Kidz Club
Kidz club Pumpkin Day was at Pine Elementary School and Calavera Hills Community
Center on October 26th and 27th. Forty-five youngsters, ages 6-12, were each given a
pumpkin to decorate, and then take home.
On November 23 and 24 the Kidz Club will be having Thanksgiving special activity days
at Pine School and Calavera Community Center. There will be a Junior High School Winter
Dance at Harding Community Center on December 3rd. Also, Frosty's Fun Crafts will be
offered at Stagecoach Community Center on December 14th.
Seniors
The Senior Center recently held their Annual Craft Sale. The event was so successful that
the profits from the sales increased 100% over last year. Proceeds support the continuation
of the crafts program.
Stuff your face with baked goodies at the November 17th Senior Center Bake Sale. Start
now and avoid the holiday calorie consumption rush!
The Senior Center will celebrate its 4th Anniversary with a cake cutting ceremony on
December 8th at 12:30 p.m. - great, more calories ... but they're a terrific group of people.
Tours of the facility will also be available.
