DIRECTOR'S REPORT - DECEMBER
Instructional Classes
Gail Watts highlights three special January workshops as part of the extensive
instructional class program for the new year. "Use Your Camcorder Like a Pro," "Photo
Album Workshop," and "Pediatric Basic Life Support" head the list of January classes.
Information on these fine offerings or any of the many instructional classes can be
obtained by calling any of Carlsbad's community centers. Gail also reports that Michelle
Alspaw's Ballet and Tap/Jazz classes recently donated more than 1,000 cans of food to
the Carlsbad Christmas Bureau! Congratulations to these aspiring performers who took
the time to help others in the community.
Davtrippers
Gail continues with news that the Rose Parade excursion is sold put! Ninety passengers
will depart on Saturday, January 1 for the 105th edition of the Pasadena Rose Parade.
Gail's highlighted trips for the upcoming period are a Bowers Museum trip and a Big Bear
Ski trip. Bowers Museum, located in Los Angeles, is the only museum of its kind in the
contiguous 48 states that concentrates on the cultural arts of the people of the Americas,
the Pacific Rim and Africa.
Special Events
Dave Millikan reports the recent winter dance, the "Snow Ball," was a resounding success.
More than 380 junior high youngsters enjoyed dancing, refreshments, and the choosing
of their king and queen at the Harding Community Center's auditorium. Dave states the
turnout more than doubled the previous dance's attendance!
Dave forwards the information that the Special Events section is holding a "Kidz Club"
Winter Camp. Slated for the dates of December 20-23, kids can enjoy games, sports and
assembling craft projects in the lovely confines of Carlsbad's Holiday Park.
Adult Sports
Jill Prichard states their busy softball season has just finished. Nearly 100 teams vied for
championship awards in men's, women's and coed divisions. All participants had a ball
and all action was completed prior to the rainy season! Next on tap for Jill and her staff
is Winter Basketball beginning in January and hosting 24 teams.
000008 EXHIBIT 1
Jerry Rodriguez reports that xeriscaping around the Parks and Recreation Department's
Administration office continues. Plant materials have been situated and irrigation routing
is being completed. Doug Duncanson states the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony
went well as his staff, in conjunction with Gian Lauro's Harding Community Center staff,
helped to orchestrate the decorations and equipment needs of the committee in charge
of the ceremony. Thanks to all staff for a job well done!
Fred Burnell and the tree section were busy on December 15 as they, in conjunction with
the Boy Scouts, planted trees at Levante Park in an effort to make the park greener and
more aesthetically pleasing to all. Staff prepared the plant material and assisted the
scouts in the actual planting.
Aquatics
The holidays bring a slow down at the Swim Complex, but also offers time for
preventative maintenance and planning time for the busy spring lesson season. North
Coast Aquatics* swimmers are still busy churning through their laps, and recreation/lap
swim is still scheduled through the holidays. Don't forget - the pool will be closed both
Christmas and New Year's Eve in addition to the traditional next day holidays.
Youth Sports
The Youth Sports Section is in the beginning phase of their youth basketball season as
more than 700 youngsters have recently hit the court. Next event for this busy group is
the annual Youth Baseball Clinic. Scheduled for January 10 through the 15th, the clinic
will be held at Calavera Hills Community Park and will be open to all boys and girls ages
8 to 15. Outstanding local youth baseball coaches will make up the staff's framework and
instruction in baseball fundamentals will highlight the week-long camp.
Seniors
Terri House reports that the Seniors had a great time in creating their own holiday
wreaths recently. Participants began this holiday class with the basic supplies and left
the center at the end of the day with the lovely, finished holiday wreaths.
The Senior Center celebrated their 4th anniversary with a cake cutting ceremony on
December 8th. The event was well attended by all and the carrot cake was deemed
extraordinary.
Upcoming events for Seniors include the popular resumption of the beginning Country
Line Dance Class slated to begin on January 10. Terri also states January 10 marks the
date for the 1st edition of the Senior Trivia Contest.
