DIRECTOR'S REPORT - MAY 1994
Seniors
The Senior Center's 2nd Annual Fashion Show by Seniors for Seniors was held on March
19. New fashions and refreshments highlighted the day as more than 80 Seniors
attended the function.
The Easter bunny was an honored guest at the recent Easter Hat Parade. The Bunny
made his appearance at the noon-time meal where over 200 seniors were served a
traditional holiday meal. Prizes were awarded for Prettiest, Most Original and Most
Outrageous hats. Proud winners were awarded potted tulips. The Senior Program Grant
has been awarded $2,400 to purchase permanent dinnerware. Prior to this purchase
styrofoam has been used. The new equipment is viewed as an environmental and
monetary savings.
The "Spring Festival of Song", a song and dance presentation by the Swingin'
Rockerettes and the Carlsbad Warblers had a large crowd at their performance in mid-
April. A similarly large and enthusiastic crowd attended the April performance of pianist
Keith Weeks and Kathreen Prout, two former music professors at Cal Poly.
The "Showcase for Seniors" is scheduled for May 12. Vendor space has been sold out
and a large number of participants is expected. Older American Month is May! The
Senior Center is hosting an information booth at the Plaza Camino Real Mall and the Mall
is offering discount coupons for seniors as a co-promotion.
Daytrlppers
The popular "1994 Tour of the World" Figure Skating Championships again returns to the
San Diego Sports Arena in June. Our trip will offer the opportunity to see outstanding
skaters like Brian Boitano, Ton/ill and Dean, Nancy Kerrigan, Mishkutemok and Dimitriev
and many others.
Adult Sports
Adult Softball and Basketball are in the middle of league play with 132 teams seeing
action each week. Registration for summer's 3-person basketball and 6-person coed
volleyball runs through May.
Carlsbad's Annual Triathlon is set for Sunday, July 10. Applications were available April
22. 1,200 - 1,500 athletes are expected to compete this year. A Triathlon Sports Expo
will precede the event on Saturday, July 9. The Expo will be held at the Carlsbad Senior
Center from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. as more than 35 sports vendors will show off their
waresandproducts

Youth Sports
Staff is preparing for Summer Youth Sports Camps as youngsters will have the
opportunity to choose camp activities in both Volleyball and Basketball. Camps will be
held at both Calavera Hills and Stagecoach Community Centers during the months of
June, July and August. Youngsters in grades 3 through 8 are invited to enjoy training by
San Marcos High coach, Steve Baum and his staff for the basketball action, and Carlsbad
Recreation Division instructor Dennis Mathis, for volleyball tutelage.
Aquatics
The Aquatics Center just played host to the Annual Lifeguard Academy as Supervisor
Carl Pope put 28 participants through 49 hours of CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard training.
Also, just completed was one of the two yearly Masters Swim Meets. The meet is always
well attended as more than 100 swimmers competed.
A Water Safety Instructor's class ran the period of April 16 - may 21. Upcoming as well
is the Avocado League High School Swimming Championships. Prelims, Diving and
Swimming Finals will be held at the Complex on May 11,13 and 14.
Spring swim lessons are well underway and mail-in registration for the Summer will
coincide with the publishing of the Department brochure in the beginning of May.
Lifeguard and Instructors for those Summer classes will be screened and selected on
April 24 and May 21.
Memorial Day hours of operation will be from 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. for interested
swimmers.
Parks
Staff has just finished the Fire Protection Maintenance Clean Up Program for the Hosp
Grove area. Personnel have been working during the past month to ensure this open
space area adjacent to residential homes is safeguarded against the threat of fire during
the dry months of summer.
Bids have been received and agenda bill forwarded to Council for award of bid for
backstop/fencing installation at Aviara Oaks Field.
