DIRECTOR'S REPORT • JULY 1994
Triathlon
Initial comments are in, and once again the Department's biggest special event has been
judged a resounding success. Supervisor, Jill Prichard reports the 13th edition of the
Carlsbad Triathlon drew more than 1,000 participants and 3,000 spectators to the lovely
ocean shores of Carlsbad. Top male and female winners were Carlsbad's very own Eric
Burgan and South Africa's Kim Carter. Congratulations to these two outstanding athletes
and all athletes, staff and volunteers who participated in this years triathlon!
Instructional Class Dance Recital
Spearheaded by the efforts of Supervisor, Robin Bettin, the 7 Annual Instructional Class
Dance Recital came off without a hitch as more than 300 children participated on the
weekend of June 11 and 12. The recital was held at the Cultural Arts Center, located on
the Carlsbad High School campus. Three separate performances each played to packed
houses of appreciative parents, family and friends. A special thanks is extended to our
fine instructors, Michelle Alspaw and Linda Wilkerson who worked tirelessly to ensure a
special weekend for all the children.
Aquatics
Following a busy few days in which staff prepared for and performed duties as
bodymarkers and swim course coordinators for the Triathlon, duties resume at the
Aquatics Center. Shannon Hooks passes on the information that summer's second
registration date is slated for July 16 at Calavera Hills as residents receive priority
registration at 8:30 a.m. followed by any non-resident registrations beginning at 9:45 a.m.
Shannon goes on to say that lessons are currently in full-swing offering classes in
everything from parent/infant to teen/adult "Learn To Swim" classes. Beginning and
Intermediate Diving classes are also in mid-stream at present.
Future class offerings include a Lifeguard Instructor Course scheduled for late July and
an Emergency Water Safety Course that begins July 19. A basic Lifeguard Class will
begin July 26 and run through August 6. The popular on-going Summer Water Polo
program is slated for every Monday and Tuesday during the hours of 7:00 p.m. to 9:00
p.m. All high school-aged athletes are welcome.
Seniors
Seniors have just returned from two exciting trips, one to Naples Island for a gondola ride
and one to the San Diego Harbor to enjoy a leisurely cruise. Upcoming events include
an "Ice Cream Social" scheduled for July 17 and a trip to Knotts Berry Farm planned for
July 21. The Arthritis Foundation is offering an Arthritis Self-Help Course at the Senior
Center beginning Tuesday, July 26. A $15.00 fee covers the cost of the course

handbook. On July 28, 10:00 a.m. presentation is scheduled at the Senior Center
entitled "How Aids Affects Senior Lives." A speaker from the Visiting Nurses Association
will be present to speak and answer questions on the subject.
Adult Sports
In the same breath that she reports to us on the Triathlon, Jill Prichard states that
Summer 3-Person Basketball is in mid-season as 24 teams compete on Tuesday and
Thursday nights at Calavera Hills Community Center. Adult Softball post season playoffs
have just wrapped up and awards were given to all 1st and 2nd place teams in each of
our many divisions.
Youth Sports
Youth Sports Coordinator, Sendee Oiler relays that the Annual High School Basketball
Tournament is complete and again proved to be a real showcase for San Diego
basketball talent. Ten teams took to the court recently with Rancho Buena Vista High
School defeating Vista High School in the Championship game. Carlsbad submitted two
entries in the tournament which afforded the coaches an opportunity to look at all the
good young talent at the high school in game-type conditions.
Sondee also reports that popular San Marcos High School coach, Steve Baum has just
completed his first summer basketball camp at Stagecoach Park. More than 30
youngsters enjoyed a week of outstanding instruction from Steve and his staff with the
last day being filled with a barbecue and prizes awarded to campers. Steve has three
more basketball camps to come, and Department instructor, Dennis Mathis will be
offering a volleyball camp in early August.
Calavera Hills
Supervisor, Gail Watts forwards information that 12 students from the community center's
"Children's Self-Defense/Kickboxing" Class recently participated in their first tournament
as they enjoyed competition at the "Hamil's University Martial Arts Network" Junior
Kickboxing Tournament in Solana Beach. Gail also reports that Calavera Hills currently
displaying artwork from the center's "Painting for Children Class" and states that some
of the renderings are quite amazing!
Gail also reminds everyone that Summer Preschool classes have just begun for the
three-month period.
News Flash!!!
The Instructional Class Dance Recital is over but the impressive news continues
regarding our young performers. Instructor, Michelle Alspaw has just returned with 16
girls, ages 9 to 13 from a "Dance Olympus Convention and Talent Search" in Las Vegas.
While there the girl's had the opportunity to engage in competition with private dance

the 5 categories offered and PLACED 1ST IN ALL FOUR! Their laurels read as follows:

1st - LYRICAL COMPETITION
1st-TAP COMPETITION
1st-JAZZ COMPETITION
Their outstanding performance earned the group a tie for 1st place in the overall
competition with a group of girls in the senior division - 16 to 19 years of age! So
impressive was their performance, that the Head Ballet Teacher at the convention will be
making a special three day stop in Carlsbad to observe and teach with Michelle prior to
business in San Diego.
Michelle states the girls had a great time as an average day saw the girls competing and
taking classes from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
CONGRATULATIONS MICHELLE AND STUDENTS FOR THIS OUTSTANDING
