September 13, 1994 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT - SEPTEMBER 1994 Davtrippers Active Carlsbadians can look forward to trips to both Ensenada and Julian in the coming weeks. Ensenada is on the docket September 24. Highlights of the trip include bargain shopping at Ensenada and a dinner stop in Rosarito Beach. Julian and San Diego County's back country will be explored on Saturday, October 1. Stops will also include fun at the famous Dudley's Bakery and Bates Nut Farm. Preschool Fall preschool classes numbering 17 in all begin in early September at the Kruger House as well as Stagecoach and Calavera Hills Community Parks. These perennially popular classes have but limited spaces still available. Capital Item The new printing press and platemaker are here and Gloria Lehmann, the "printress", is busy educating herself and being trained for an early September start-up. The new press offers many new options including the printing of envelopes and letterhead and utilizing gloss stock paper! Aquatics The Aquatics Center has just completed one of their busiest summers to date. Though statistics are not yet available, it's quite apparent the demand for swim lessons is an all time high. Carl Pope reports a "Volunteer Recognition Day" was staged on August 24 for all the summer volunteers who assisted with lessons. Pizza and refreshments and pool activities highlighted the day. In anticipation of a busy fall, repairs to the pool's shell and fiberglass lining have just been completed. Other maintenance was completed as well so that service will continue uninterrupted throughout the fall. The Carlsbad High School Water Polo Team will host a North County Tournament 09 EXHIBIT 1 beginning September 23. All home matches for the team throughout the season are hosted by our-department's Aquatics Center. Adult Sports Softball season began August 15 as 102 teams started the new season and a new 15 game format. Assisting supervisor Jill Prichard is Andy Meade, a "part-time employee of the quarter" recipient now starting his 7th year with us. Youth Sports Basketball and volleyball camps have just finished as more than 150 youths completed week-long sessions at both Calavera Hills and Stagecoach Parks. Highlights of the camp included individual fundamental work, fun prize competitions and a weekend barbecue for all the campers. Special Events Staff's version of "Kidz Camp" that included excursions, games and crafts has just concluded and reviews point to a "wildly" successful two weeks for the youngsters. Again, about 150 kids registered for the camps, one week at Stagecoach Park, one week at Holiday Park. Excursions to the beach, Vista's "Wave" Water Park, and the Library are highlights of the camp.
