DIRECTOR'S REPORT - JANUARY 1995
The Parks and Tree Maintenance Divisions were besieged last week as a result of
damage caused by record setting wind and rainfall. Approximately 35 large trees (40'-
70') and 80 small-medium size trees (20'-40') were blown down. In addition, over 200
large limbs had to be removed from roadways, public right-of-ways and private property.
Maintenance crews are continuing clean up activities this week. Departmental staff is still
in the process of assessing damage. However, the maintenance personnel are
commended for the manner in which they reacted to this emergency situation.
Other impacts sustained to Parks and Recreation facilities include water leaks to both
Calavera and Stagecoach Park Community Centers/Gymnasiums as a result of wind
shear and standing roof top water levels. Although the damage was minimal, an
accompanying power outage coupled with maintenance efforts required temporary
closure and evacuation of the buildings for the evening's activities. Damage to the wind
screens at the Swim Complex and tennis courts will also require replacement at a cost
of approximately $5,000.
On perhaps a more positive note, (depending upon where your loyalties lie) the
increased water levels in San Diego did not improve the amphibious environment as the
local bolts managed to squish the fish on Sunday, January 8, at the Murph! Next stop,
looborg Pittsburgh!
The annual youth baseball clinic, originally scheduled for the week of January 9-13 has
been rescheduled for the following week (16-20) due to the forecasted inclement
weather. The clinic provides both offensive and defensive baseball fundamentals for area
youth between the ages of 8-15. This special event creates an opportunity to tune up
and master the skills required for the upcoming baseball season - let's hope they don't
strike!
Speaking of baseball, the Ballfield Maintenance crews added over 6 tons of crushed red
brick to the infields of the baseball/softball fields at Stagecoach and Calavera parks. The
infields were leveled and readied in anticipation of the 1995 season. Yes, that's right,
let's hope they don't strike!
After a holiday hiatus, the youth basketball program has resumed play. During the
holiday break in action, both gym floors at Calavera and Stagecoach were resurfaced.
Fortunately that resurfacing project resulted in no damage to the gym floors as a result
of leaks caused by the recent storm activity.

Congratulations to the recently selected 3/4 time Recreation Assistants. Marc Beasley,
Betsy Kennedy and Andy Meade (all previous part-time employees) will provide their
expertise to Youth Sports/Special Events, Enrichment Classes and Adult Sports,
respectively.
A one day excursion to Laughlin Nevada's Golden Nugget Casino is scheduled for
January 21, 1995. Daytripper's next outing will be to the Los Angeles Garment District
on Saturday, January 28, where everyone can shop, shop, shop! In February the
Maritime Museum ships in San Diego will be visited, with a cruise of the harbor, lunch
at Tom Ham's Lighthouse Restaurant, and a stop at the Cabrillo National Monument.
Recently 67 participants enjoyed the annual excursion to view the Tournament of Roses
Parade.
Although not held on the thirty-first or the first, it was a first — as over 100 Seniors
danced in the New Year with a New Year's Dance held at the Senior Center on
December 29, 1994. With music provided by the ever popular Golden Tones, the
popularity and enjoyment experienced by the participants will certainly pave the way for
a second annual event to be held this year.
Congratulations to Jim and Terry Bradshaw as they are the proud parents of twin girls,
born January 1, 1995. Although missing a dual tax deduction by six hours, what a
wonderful way to bring in the New Year. After reading this Director's Report, I'm sure
everybody will welcome Jim back to work soon, as he is the regular author of this report
(I know I will). Mom will undoubtedly take some extra time off, but will nonetheless be
welcomed back when she does return to work. Again, Congratulations.
