Aquatics
A Water Safety Instructor's class is slated soon at the pool as a full complement of 12
students go through the training. Just complete is the "Lifeguard Academy" with 25
graduates going on to the ranks of expert waterpersons throughout Carlsbad and the
North County.
Special Events
Just completed is another edition of the Spring Teen Dance. Scheduled at Calavera
Hills Community Center, hundreds of junior high-aged youngsters enjoyed the music
of their favorite artists and refreshments. Pictures were also taken of any youth and
their friends to commemorate the evening's fun.
Another addition in a long series of events is taking place this week. The annual
"Kidz Spring Camp" is being run at Stagecoach Community Center. Taking
advantage of the time that youngsters have away from school, staff offers a menu of
games, crafts, and educational offerings during the week of camp. This series has
proven to be exceptionally popular and each and every recent camp has been jam
packed.
Upcoming events for this section include the Spring Garage Sale and Summer Camp
for kids. Scheduled over this coming weekend are the three Egg Hunts at
Stagecoach, Calavera Hills and Holiday Parks. Staff is expecting more than 2,000
children to attend the hunts!

informative, important presentation by Darlynne Reyes Menkin,
Consumer Producer for Channel 8 KFMB News.

involves more than 30 vendors presenting their latest products and

Youth Sports
Youth Basketball is now complete and County Tournament action is over. Two teams
were especially successful in their efforts during this County competition. Jim Van
Pelt's 5/6 grade team from Calavera Hills was victorious in winning the County
Championships. Jim Miller's 3/4 grade team, also from Calavera Hills, was successful
in copping the consolation championship. Congratulations to these teams as well as
all the 680 youth that participated this year.
Upcoming events for this section include the Youth Track Clinic scheduled April 22 at
Carlsbad High School to be followed the next weekend by the Annual Youth Track
and Field Meet, also slated for Carlsbad High.
Ballfields
Gian Lauro reports that the La Costa Youth Organization recently donated 50 tons of
dirt that was applied to the diamond at the Safety Center Field. City employees, Andy
Bullington and Tyler Mazzacco assisted Gian in the application of the soil. The field
looks outstanding, and we thank LCYO and our staff for their work.
Announcements
It is a real pleasure to announce that Mike Fiser, injured critically in a winter ski
accident, has made a remarkable recovery, and in fact, is now working again at our
Calavera Hills facility. Mike is extremely popular with his fellow workers and provides
a real inspiration to all of us that work along side him. WELCOME BACK MIKEI
Seniors
The Carlsbad Senior Center was host to a St. Patrick's Day Dance recently, and early
returns deem the dance a resounding success as 132 seniors kicked up their heels to
music performed by the "Golden Tones." Daniels Cablevision was on hand and taped
the festivities.
The class "Spanish on the Job" also took place during the month of March and
attendance was impressive as instructor Julie Heard tutored the assembled.
Additionally, the new exercise class, "Fun and Fitness in the Hawaiian Style" has
proven quite popular. Some attendees don their moo-moos and Hawaiian shirts to
learn this gentle and relaxing form of exercise.
April signals the close once again of the very successful tax program. Trained Senior
Volunteers assist participants with preparation of their tax forms.
