Director's Report - June, 1995 08 June 14, 1995 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT - JUNE 1995 INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES On May 5 and 6, approximately 17 dancers from the Recreation Division's Dance classes competed in the ENCORE DANCE COMPETITION held in San Diego. The nine to eleven year olds competed in five categories: Ballet, Lyrical, Jazz, Acrobatic and Choreography. The girl's placed 1st in four of the categories, copping a second in Choreography! Additionally, a group of 6-8 year olds competed in a jazz category and also took home a first place trophy. Congratulations to all these talented young dancers and their dedicated instructor, Michelle Alspaw! Barely 1 month later all of these youngsters, along with 300 of their classmates took part in the Annual Spring Dance Recital for Recreation Division dance classes. Four performances were held at the Carlsbad Community Cultural Arts Center on June 2, 3 and 4. All performances played to a packed house, and the reviews point to a resounding success! Congratulations are in order to instructors Michelle Alspaw and Linda Wilkerson as well as Robin Bettin and Betsy Kennedy who supervised this highly popular area of the Recreation Division. Betsy Kennedy has also recently begun classes for citizens in "Wheelchair Tennis" and "Computer Skills for ADD Children." The tennis class has begun already and the computer class for gifted and above average intelligence children who have a learning disability and/or ADD(ADHD) is expected to be an on-going class of great popularity. CALAVERA HILLS COMMUNITY CENTER Gail Watts reports that a display of artwork from the Calavera Preschool is now showing in the lobby at the Calavera Hills Center. An amazing array of arts and crafts projects from these local 3 and 4 year old students has been artistically presented by instructor, Erica Weber. PRESCHOOL Gail also forwards the information that Kruger House's five week summer sessions will begin the week of June 25. Classes for children, ages 1-5, and their parents, will include a variety of hands-on learning experience and lots of fun. TRIATHLON Applications for the 14th Annual Carlsbad Triathlon are now available at the three Community Centers and local sporting goods shops. Join us July 8 and 9 for a number of exciting events. Saturday marks the day of all events leading into Sunday's triathlon. Events include a Children's Fun Run, Triathlon Seminars, Craft and Sport Expo and Luau Dinner that night. Enjoy all the festivities both days! Many Olympic, World and National medal winners will be a part of the day's highlights. The Laguna Arts Festival "Pageant of the Masters" is scheduled for the Irvine Bowl on July 19 and August 9 for interested Carlsbad citizens. The night's highlight is the famous artwork presented by using live models! ADULT SPORTS Jill Prichard and Andy Meade are busy wrapping up softball playoffs and have just recently completed a highly successful 5-person basketball season. Awards for this basketball league included the presenting of custom-engraved leather basketballs courtesy of the SPALDING ATHLETIC COMPANY. We thank them for their continued support of the Carlsbad Adult Sports Section. Registration for the Fall Softball Season takes place during the period of June 26 - July 14. Games begin the first week of August. AQUATICS Carl Pope and staff have just completed an active couple of months which is followed by the even busier summer season. Carl forwards information that the pool hosted a Masters Swim Meet April 9 that drew more than 180 participants to the Aquatics Center. The pool also played host to 5 home swim meets for the Carlsbad Lancers during April and May. Recently completed were 5 swim lesson sessions with 150 participants enrolled. Water Safety Instructor sessions were completed in May with 10 individuals going through the rigorous training of which 3 participants were retained for employment this summer by the Aquatics Center. Mail-in registration is complete at the pool as more than 425 registrations were posted. Revenues from these mail-ins totalled more than $16,000. YOUTH SPORTS Marc Beasley and Donnie Moore of the Youth Sports/Special Events Section have just submitted their numbers on the Youth Track & Field Program. The numbers point to a wildly successful program. More than 150 youngsters participated at the Citywide Track Meet, and 46 travelled onto the County Meet in Poway. Sixteen young tracksters competed successfully at Poway thus earning the right to go onto the Southern California Championships in Long Beach. This was the resumption of a program that had been successful in the early and mid-eighties so kudos must be forwarded to Marc and Donnie for their work. The sixteen youngsters that qualified for the So. Cal Finals is a record for any year! Congratulations to staff for their outstanding achievement! 10 SPECIAL EVENTS Aimee Smith, Special Events staffperson and "Queen of the Garage Sales," has just completed another successful event, the Spring Garage Sale, as more than 75 sellers sold their items to thousands at Holiday Park on Saturday, June 3. Also just complete is the Section's first-ever "Summer Splash", a dance and pool party for 6, 7 and 8th graders that took place at the Aquatics Center on Friday, June 9. All in attendance had an absolute blast, so much so that few wanted to leave once 10:00 rolled around. MISCELLANEOUS The Recreation Section recently chose their part-time employees of the quarter. The recipients were: • Brian Brady - Aquatics • Carmen Lopez - Daytrippers • Donnie Moore - Youth Sports/Special Events Brian has been an integral part of the Aquatics staff, teaching lessons, lifeguarding and covering the office. His rapport is outstanding with both staff and students. Brian works the early morning shift, and has been at it nearly two years with no more than 1 or 2 sick days logged. Carmen has been with this Department, well - just about longer than anyone! Her enthusiasm has never waned, in fact many people ask for Carmen by name and will not attend a trip unless she is the guide. Carmen is the reason our Daytripper program is successful! Donnie is fairly new to the Department having worked for the Recreation Division approximately 1 year. During this time however, he has overseen Youth Camps, the Golf Clinic and Youth Track & Field. He has procured outstanding sponsors and prizes for many of these same events, and overall has been a real find for the Recreation Division! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THREE OF OUR FINE RECIPIENTS! PARKS DIVISION The Parks division has recently completed the installation of the soccer field portion of the Aviara Oaks Sports Complex. The last phase of this project involves the construction of a permanent backstop in the southeastern comer of the facility. Completion of this backstop and fencing is planned during the month of July. The Parks division is also planning for the "Jazz in the Parks" concerts which begin June 23 at Stagecoach Park.
