DIRECTOR'S REPORT - JULY 1995
DAYTRIPPERS
Dave Millikan reminds us that the ever-popular Laguna Arts Festival trips are approaching
fast and limited seats remain. The dates of the trips are July 19 and August 9 at the
Irvine Bowl. Additionally, any lucky citizens should partake of the Department's
upcoming Las Vegas Turnabout. Scheduled for August 3, locals can enjoy the gorgeous
Imperial Palace as the hosting casino for this junket!
CALAVERA HILLS COMMUNITY CENTER
Staff reports the Carlsbad Grad Nite Celebration that took place on Thursday, June 15,
has been deemed a resounding success. Hundreds of grads danced and partied the
night and early morning away in a safe, non-alcohol atmosphere and moved to the
sounds of Liquid Groove as they enjoyed games, munchies and prizes. Kudos to all the
parents who worked countless hours to set-up this night. Calavera Hills staff led by
Supervisor Gail Watts, were integral in facilitating this very large event and its eventual
smooth transition to completion.
YOUTH SPORTS/SPECIAL EVENTS
Marc Beasley and staff have just completed their first week of summer camp and youth
basketball sessions. More than 100 youngsters participated during this first week of the
summer. Upcoming events include more summer camp sessions and the Internationally
renowned "Carlsbad Bodysurfing Championships" scheduled for mid-August at Carlsbad
State Beach/South Ponto. With the new jetties in place, sand has returned to the beach,
and the sand bottom and reef conditions have made South Ponto an attractive place to
hold this world-famous contest.
TRIATHLON
The 14th edition of the Department's biggest event went off without a hitch on Sunday,
July 9. More than 5,000 citizens cruised by Saturday's Triathlon Expo while another
2,000 stayed to enjoy the evening's luau and all the accompanying festivities; 1,400 of
these people enjoyed a sumptuous meal at the luau.
On Sunday, 900 triathletes participated in a problem-free race. The "Vision" of a new
Triathlon course and the pre-event festivities was realized as a resounding success. Staff
is extremely pleased with the whole weekend and thank Commissioner Holmes and
Councilmember Hall and Finnila for their efforts in support of the event. Also a special
thanks to "Exotic Wood Pens" for truly unique awards.
10
One final huge thanks to event coordinator, Jill Prichard, for an "A" plus effort. This is an
event few people could orchestrate, but Jill does it with great aplomb!
AQUATICS
Carl Pope reports the July session of swim lessons is currently in full swing and running
well. All classes are very well attended. His registration for the 4th and 5th weekday and
last weekend swim session is scheduled for this Saturday at Calavera Hills. As with the
other sessions, attendance should be high as weather turns seasonably warm.
SENIORS
Over 220 Seniors enjoyed a holiday celebration on the 3rd of July with a barbecue lunch.
Hosted by the Senior Center, a cast of volunteers prepared and served a traditional lunch
of hamburger, beans, potato salad and watermelon. Don't forget the "Senior Safari" and
their offerings during the next many weeks. The "Sawdust Festival" and a "Return to the
Apple Season Back on the Farm" are highlights for early August. Make sure to check
in with the Senior Center for all their exciting safaris during the late summer and fall.
PARKS
In addition to the summer park maintenance (trying to keep up with the growing grass
and crowds at the parks), the Parks Division has been busy completing all items
identified on the annual City safety inspection.
There has also been a promotion in the Parks Division, Roy Hansen has been promoted
to the vacant Parks Maintenance Worker III position. This fills the vacancy created by
Larry Nichols' retirement.
The final touches are also being completed at the Aviara Oaks Field. This includes turf
and irrigation around the large baseball field exterior. Installation of the 2nd permanent
backstop (in the southeast corner) and the procurement of soccer goals. We hope to
have an open house at this facility in late August.
Bids have been received for the construction of Hosp Grove Park (across from the bird
observation area). The award of bid should take place in late July with construction
expected to begin in mid to late August.
Poinsettia Park is currently out to bid. The bid opening will be August 10, 1995. Upon
reviewing of these bids we will have a good idea of what will be constructed in
Phase I.
