DIRECTOR'S REPORT - SEPTEMBER 1995
ADULT SPORTS
3-Person Basketball concluded the week of September 5th. Tank tops and basketballs
donated by the Spaulding Company were given to the winning teams. 5-Person
Basketball will begin September 19 and run through January 1996. Softball is in full
swing with leagues participating at Stagecoach, Brierly (Pine) and Calavera Hills fields.
AQUATICS
With Summer winding down, Carl Pope reports that the Aquatics Center experienced its
highest registration/revenue figure ever. He also reports a very good recreation swim
figure despite June/July gloom. Carl's fall schedule begins September 8 and most
classes are full already through mid-November.
With school beginning, Carl says Carlsbad High School PE classes will utilize the pool
3 days per week, and the school's Water Polo Team will practice each weekday
afternoon from 2:30 to 5:00. This assures that the pool is used Monday through Friday
from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
«
The Aquatics Center will be sponsoring a Water Polo Tournament, September 22 and 23,
and the public is welcome.
CALAVERA HILLS COMMUNITY CENTER
The now completed trio of "Jazz In The Park" concerts at Calavera Hills drew a total of
more than 3,000 music lovers to the grass of Calavera Hills. Gail Watts reports that
almost 400 are enrolled in upcoming classes this fall at the center. She also says that
the recent offerings, "Youth Cooking Camp" and "Babysitting Certification" were very well
received by participants at the facility.
Gail states that nearly 160 children are registered currently at Calavera Hills, Stagecoach
and Kruger House in the department's thriving preschool. Kruger House instructors
Brenda Elg and Dee Pope recently filmed a "Take 5" segment with Daniels Cablevision
that documented the preschool program. The segments were aired throughout the
month of August with Dee's (and Carl's) daughter, Coral, providing the real "star quality"
in the production!

YOUTH SPORTS/SPECIAL EVENTS >=^
Marc Beasley forwards the information that his staff has just completed Summer Camps
and the results were outstanding. More than 300 kids enjoyed camps in a variety of
settings throughout the summer with agendas that included sports, arts and crafts and
field trips. Marc's plans for next year include a camp program throughout the summer
that parents may choose in one week segments as they wish.
Congratulations to Marc and his staff of counselors!
Marc and his staff worked a long weekend in mid-August as the 17th renewal of the
Carlsbad International Bodysurfing Championships took place at South Ponto State
Beach. All in attendance had a great time, the surf was good and the prizes were
outstanding. Seventeen and counting for an internationally renown contest!
