DIRECTOR'S REPORT - DECEMBER 1995
YOUTH SPORTS
Led by Marc Beasley and Sendee Oiler, the Youth Basketball Season is underway.
Nearly 700 youngsters on 70 teams are participating at Stagecoach and Calavera Hills
Community Centers. The first two weeks have gone off without a hitch which is a real
testimony to Marc's and Sendee's skills! Upcoming events for Youth Sports include the
Youth Baseball Camp, held in early January at Calavera Hills, and the Youth Golf Clinic,
scheduled for late February at Carlsbad's Olympic Resort. Getting a taste of
programming and doing an outstanding job is Gian Lauro the Department's supervisor
for facilities. Gian is coordinating the Baseball Camp and has lined up some outstanding
prizes for our kids and volunteer coaches!
SPECIAL EVENTS
Marc Beasley and staff have just completed a tremendously successful "Winter Dance"
at Calavera Hills Community Center. More than 400, 7th and 8th grade youngsters
enjoyed the great alternative music of the D.J. and enjoyed complimentary pictures
provided by the Department staff of kids and their buddies. Additionally, Department
employees staffed a snack stand that was overwhelmingly popular. Kids need fuel to
dance, and 7th and 8th graders fueled up throughout the fun evening. Upcoming for
Special Events is the Annual Winter Holiday Camp. Slated for the week just prior to
Christmas, kids are exposed to a variety of arts, crafts, games and sports in this jam-
packed, exciting day long camp. Camp is scheduled for Carlsbad's Holiday Park.
RECREATION
Recent recipients of the Recreation Section's Employee of the Quarter included the
following:
Laurie Haslam
Laurie Miller
Sendee Oiler
Clint Huggins Jr.
Both Laurie's are outstanding teachers in the Department's renown preschool program.
Sendee coordinates the Youth Sports area and Clint, better known to us as Bobby, is an
outstanding facility attendant, working at Stagecoach Park. Our congratulations to these
fine employees for their excellent work on behalf of the Department.
Oil
Recreation Division staff are currently involved in two seasonal programs that will bring
sporting equipment to the youth-in Carlsbad. The first program is the 'CARLSBAD
COMMUNITY CLUB DRIVE1. Spearheaded by Commissioner Bob Holmes, the drive is
bringing golf clubs, used or no longer used, into the Department from citizens of
Carlsbad. These clubs, as well as balls and bags will be given to all kids in attendance
at the Department's Annual Free Golf Clinic scheduled for late February. The other
equipment drive is called 'OPERATION REPLAY 1996'. Cities throughout California are
involved in receiving equipment from their citizens to benefit a local youth group in town.
The Recreation Division will be collecting used sports equipment at each of their 3
recreation centers through the end of January. Once all has been collected and
inventoried, the equipment will be forwarded to the Carlsbad Girls' Club. This program
is also sponsored by the California Parks and Recreation Society.
DAYTRIPPERS
Dave Millikan reminds us that with the Holidays' approaching, the Department's
traditional pilgrimage to Pasadena and the Rose Parade approaches. The trip is sold out
and anticipation is high for this most entertaining day trip. Anticipation also pervades the
citizens' that will attend the Department's upcoming Las Vegas Turnabout. Always
popular, and led by our own "lucky" Carmen Lopez, citizens hope to come back with a
jackpot won courtesy of our host, the Imperial Palace.
AQUATICS
The Carlsbad Swim Complex will be closed for a period of three weeks beginning
December 11, in order to allow staff to perform necessary repairs. The Aquatics staff will
provide preventive maintenance to the chlorination and heating systems, locker rooms
as well as drain the entire pool and inspect the condition of the fiberglass coating.
These functions are typically performed at this time of the year when participation at the
pool is decreased and high school classes are on Holiday break. The pool will re-open
on January 2, 1996.
SENIORS
Teri House reports that the Carlsbad Senior Center has been, and will continue to be
especially busy during the Holiday Season. The Annual Crafts & White Elephant Sale
was held on Wednesday, November 8th. There was a huge selection of crafts offered
to the large numbers of shoppers, and the day was deemed a great success. Another
successful sojourn was had by 25 of our Carlsbad Seniors who recently travelled to San
Diego to enjoy a mini-bus tour that included shopping at Seaport Village, a guided
walking tour and a short film of the changing downtown area.
012
Seniors can get their picture taken with Santa Clause on Friday, December 22, from
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon. Santa will be residing in the Gallery, and a small charge of
$2.00 will be collected to have a seating with this most famous of Holiday personalities.
PARKS
The construction of the 42 acre Poinsettia Community Park, Phase I is progressing nicely
and is on schedule. The grading for the entire park site has been completed. Other
park amenities currently being constructed are the rest rooms/snack bar and drainage
systems for the full size ball field and landscaping on the perimeter slopes. With input
from the Park Development Coordinator, the Engineering Department's inspection
division is in charge of monitoring the progress of the park development.
Hosp Grove Park (Special Use Area) Ribbon Cutting Dedication Ceremony was held on
Monday, December 4. The 5.5 acre passive park includes a children's play area, picnic
tables, trails, and parking for 17 cars. The park is already being heavily used by citizens'
of Carlsbad many of whom visit the adjacent duck observation area.
Aviara Oaks athletic field was officially dedicated on Saturday, December 2, 1995. In
attendance were; Councilmembers, School Board Trustees, Parks and Recreation
Commissioners, School and City staff. Although the fields were officially dedicated
December 2, 1995, sports activities have been taking place there since the spring. La
Costa Youth Organization girls' youth baseball was playing on the baseball field in the
spring and soccer began their season on the fields in September.
To accommodate more usage, the additional permanent baseball infield will be skinned
and prepared during the month of January (weather permitting) these fields are providing
a great asset to the community groups which pay for their maintenance.
