ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for January 1996. EXHIBITS: 1. Director's Report - January 1996. 008 January 10, 1996 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT - OCTOBER 1995 ADULT SPORTS \ 5-Man basketball playoffs were held during the first 3 weeks of January. Jill Prichard reports that tourney winners received a Spalding basketball donated by Spalding USA. Current registration is being accepted for the Winter/Spring 5-Man Basketball league. Deadline is January 28. Softball registration is now being accepted through February 9. An additional item, not submitted by Jim Bradshaw (probably due to his modest personality), but seriously, Jim recently received a "Service Award" this year at the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF) Awards and Installation Banquet in Palm Springs. The award was presented to Jim for his long standing, and more significantly; Outstanding work with the Federation over many years — Congratulations Jim! (you modest devil). YOUTH SPORTS/SPECIAL EVENTS Marc Beasley forwards the information that "Stay n' Play" has been very successful the first few months. More than 300 youngsters at Jefferson and Pine have been served by this program. Winter Camp during the Christmas break saw more than 70 kids enjoy a variety of holiday activities including a "Whale Watching" journey. Upcoming events include the annual Youth golf Clinic and Youth Track & Field Meet. CALAVERA HILLS Supervisor Gail Watts reports that her gymnasium floors and activity room floor look brand new following the recent refinishing work. All rooms are heavily booked as Gail and her staff look forward to the busiest year at this facility. 009 GRAPHICS Gail also reports that the Graphics area printed more than 125,000 flyers from the more than 100 work orders they processed last year. A special thanks to Gail and her graphics area for making the whole division look so good! PRESCHOOL Preschool instructors have resumed a full class schedule following the holiday break. Over $700 was raised for school supplies recently by the Kruger Preschool program. A special thanks to all parents and instructors who assisted with the fundraiser. DAYTRIPPERS February 11 and 12, signal the long awaited arrival of the "Buffalo Bill's" Casino trip. Limited space is available so get your reservations soon. Fee (double occupancy) is $55/person. Casino will give each person $10 to start their successful playing. All participants will receive a casino fun book as well. Beauty and the Beast is scheduled for Sunday, February 25. Tickets are $90 which includes bus ride and orchestra seats for the 1:00 p.m. matinee. SENIORS Terri House of the Senior Center reports that a new group, P.C. USERS will be adjourning for the first time on January 18. Their first meeting will determine the direction for future discussions. Also scheduled for the near future is a meeting "Investing for Income" slated for January 24. Recently a group of 25 seniors took a trip to Orange County where they had the pleasure of attending a "Holiday Faire" at the famous "Piecemakers" store. This stop was followed by a stop at "Rogers" Garden to see their famous display of Christmas trees. 010 PARKS The newly dedicated Hosp Grove Park Special Use Area is being utilized extensively by the public as citizens venture into the forest to discover this little gem of a park in Carlsbad. Parks personnel under Supervisor Jerry Rodriguez are scheduling work to begin skinning the Aviara Oaks ballfield diamond soon. This will enable spring softball/baseball groups to utilize the field in time for their season. BRADSHAW c: City Manager Assistant City Manager Department Heads Oil
