TRIATHLON
Event Coordinator, Jill Prichard states that race and volunteer applications are being
distributed during the months of May and June. Jill has energetically scheduled
numerous festivities for the Saturday before the race, including a Longboard Surf
Exhibition, Vintage Car Show, Kayak Demonstrations, Sand Castling Contest and "Kidz"
Fun Run. These events are in addition to the Surf & Sports Expo and Luau Party &
Dinner we all enjoyed last year! Jill also reminds us that Sunday's start time is moved
back an hour to 8 am, so sleep that extra hour and enjoy the fun of our Department's
biggest annual event.

the upcoming playoffs. Andy also reports that 30 adult basketball teams recently
finished their Winter season. Upcoming for this section is it's annual 3-person summer

SENIORS
Teri House updates us on the recently started "Cartooning and Greeting Card Design
Class". 16 students have enrolled and are being taught by professional cartoonist, Mr.
Paul Cringle.
As part of the celebration for "Older American's Month", seniors enjoyed two special
events. The "Golden Tones" entertained a large crowd at the weekly Carlsbad
Farmer's Market on Wednesday May 8. Volunteers attended a table with Senior
Center activities and Informational fliers to pass on to those enjoying the "Golden
Tones". The second event saw more than 500 seniors attend the 3 annual "Showcase
for Seniors". The North County Times served as a co-sponsor through their
contribution of ad space. A good mix of 26 vendors made the fair topical and pertinent
to attending seniors.
Upcoming events at the Center include a free seminar titled: "Is There An Arthritis
Diet?". The seminar is scheduled for Thursday May 23, and is part of a special
program throughout the country touting "National Arthritis Month".
"Kitchen Sink Theatre" will serve as the finale of the Spring MiraCosta College Drama
Class. The performance will feature seniors on stage acting anything but their age in
off-the-wall improvisational sketches that rely on movement, masks and costumes. The
public is welcome at the performance on Wednesday May 29 at 1:00 PM.

Season has just been completed with Avocado League pre-lims and finals being held at
the Complex this past weekend. More than 800 people attended the championship
during a two day period. 9 different teams from area high schools vied for the rights to
be called Avocado League Champs. The Swim Complex hosted 8 Carlsbad High home
meets during the season.
Carl also states that the year round Masters and Aqua X classes are currently running
with continuing high attendance. Other classes including the conclusion to spring swim
lessons are strongly attended and continue to be popular.
Carl's staff is currently accepting mail-in registration for Carlsbad residents as they sign
up for the eagerly awaited Summer Swim Sessions. Lessons are taught throughout the
week and on the weekend to serve the needs of the public. Walk-in registration will
take place subsequent to the current registration at Calavera Hills Park on Saturday
June 1.
Special programs currently offered at the Swim Complex include Age-Group Water
Polo for area high school and junior high students. This program is held two
weeknights each week and will continue throughout the summer. Attendance has been
consistently 35-40 and more. Also being held this summer is a synchronized swimming
class. Carl expects a good interest will be shown what with Olympic competition in the
sport designated for Atlanta during the late summer.
Professional training for lifeguards and instructors is always on-going at the Aquatics
Center and is one of Carlsbad's strengths. The North Coast Lifeguard Academy just
finished with 25 graduating after the rigorous training. In addition to lifeguard training,
these guards have been taught CPR for Professional Rescuers and a special course of
1st Aid for the Professional Waterperson. Currently being taught is the Water Safety
Instructor Course. May 4 signaled the beginning to the class with a wrap up day
scheduled for May 23. Carl and staff remain as busy as any staff in Recreation, as they
serve the public's intense need for Aquatic training and the upcoming instructional
class schedule.
INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES
Michelle Alspaw and her outstanding troupe of dancers continue to rack up impressive
honors as they copped top awards in two recent dance competitions and conventions.
In late March, Michelle and dancers attended the "Dance Olympics" competition at
SDSU's Open Air Amphitheatre. The young women won a 1st place award in all 13
dances they performed ! They also garnered the awards of "Best Choreography", "Best
Presentation" and "Best Emotional Execution" of a number. One of Michelle's students,
Colleen Phillips, was picked to tour with the Dance Olympus troupe this summer!
On May 11, Michelle and her dancers traveled back to San Diego's Holiday Inn On the
Bay to compete and be instructed during the Professional Dance Teacher's Association
Convention. The competition was titled "Stars of Tomorrow" and the girls received 17
awards including 8 1st and 6 2nd place awards. Their honors also included Top Scoring
Duet and Trio and 3rd top scoring Production and Group. During the competition, 6
scholarships were awarded to Michelle's troupe. Sumer Sabin received a prestigious
grant to dance with New York's Jeffrey Ballet in New York during the summer.
Stephanie Langlais received a grant to attend Debbie Reynolds' Studio for Jazz in
Hollywood. Four of Michelle's younger stars of the future received scholarships to
attend this convention in the future.
There are not enough superlatives to describe Michelle's energy, expertise and
undying loyalty to her girls. Congratulations to Michelle, her troupe and the
outstanding contributions of her dance parents.
