SUMMARY REPORT OF THE APRIL 15, 1996 PARKS AND RECREATION
COMMISSION MEETING
PRESENTATIONS:
The Annual Volunteer Recognition Awards were presented to acknowledge volunteer
services to the Parks and Recreation Department in the following categories - Media
Award, Service Award, Special Achievement Award and Recognition Award.
CONSENT CALENDAR:
The following items were unanimously (6-0) approved by the Commission.
1. AB 496-1 DIRECTORS REPORT - April 1996
2. AB 496-2 SUMMARY REPORT - March 18, 1996 Parks and Recreation
Commission Meeting.
PUBLIC HEARINGS: None
DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
3. AB 496-3 NATIONAL YOUTH SPORTS COACHES ASSOC. (NYSCA)
By a unanimous vote (7-0) the Commission recommended that the issue of the
Parks and Recreation Department participation in the NYSCA be referred to
staff with direction to report back within 30 days, with information on ways in
which the department can take advantage of the instruction offered by NYSCA.
4. AB 496-4 CITIZEN LETTER REGARDING SKATEBOARDING AT CALAVERA
HILLS COMMUNITY PARK
After review of a citizen letter regarding safety concerns relating to skateboard
use at Calavera Hills Community Park, staff reiterated current practices in
managing and controlling the use of skateboards at park sites. Staff will
continue to monitor and supervise skateboard activity in community park sites
and take appropriate action in order to maintain a safe environment for sport
spectators, pedestrians and skateboarders. In addition, the Recreation
Superintendent provided an update on a recent tour by members of the City
Council, school Board and staff to view skateboard parks in Huntington Beach
and at the Encinitas YMCA.

5. AB 496-5 BOARDS AND COMMISSION WORKSHOP
Staff gave an informational update and reminder to Commission members
regarding the upcoming workshop to be held April 30, 1996 from 4:00 - 9:00
p.m. at the Public Safety and Service Center.
