DIRECTOR'S REPORT - JULY 1996
ADULT SPORTS
Gail Watts who supervises the Adult Sports Section together with Supervisor Jill
Prichard and Assistant Sondee Oiler, relay to us that Registration for Summer/Fall
Softball Leagues is currently in progress and extends through July 19. Games for
Men's, Women's and Coed leagues begin August 5. The ten game season culminates
with additional post-season play and is scheduled at Calavera hills, Stagecoach and
Brierly fields. Registration information is available at any of the three community
centers or by calling Sondee or Jill at 434-2858.
CALAVERA HILLS COMMUNITY PARK
On June 12, 13 & 14, Calavera Community Center/Gymnasium was the site for the
1996 CHS Grad "Knight Flight". On the evening of June 13, over 300 graduates from
Carlsbad High School participated in the all night event. More than 200 parent
volunteers turned the entire Community Center into an "International Wonderland" for
the excited grads.
Calavera Hills was also the site for the recent "1996 Seabreeze Tournament", a fund-
raiser hosted by the Carlsbad Softball Association. More than 1,000 spectators
attended the tournament that saw approximately 100 girls participate on the weekend
of June 15 & 16.
Calavera's Multi-Purpose rooms have a new look thanks to the Building Maintenance
Division. Wall carpeting was installed on the bottom half of the wall to give Calavera a
new clean look. The carpeting also helps buffer sound for any meetings or activities.
Gail also forwards information that Parent/Toddler and Preschool classes are in their
third week of the five week summer session at the Kruger House Preschool. More than
30 children are currently enjoying a wide variety of activities including nature, science,
art, music and language arts subject matter. Fall registration is in progress with just a
few spaces still available.
TRIATHLON
Triathlon Coordinator, Jill Prichard reports approximately 1,000 triathletes will be
challenging her course on Sunday, July 14. Saturday's festivities include a Longboard
Surfing Exhibition and Free Lessons, Open Water Kayak Demonstrations, a 10'
Sandcastle Exhibit, Kid's Fun Run, Evening Luau and Party that includes dinner.
Remember, the events take place at Robert C. Frazee Beach and we hope everyone
will take advantage of this exciting two days. Triathlon information can be had by
calling 434-2856.

INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES
Norm Belsterling, a Department instructor for Karate, recently took his students to the
Amateur Athletic Union National Karate Championships in Riverside. Held during the
last few days of June, Norm's students won 33 individual medals, this included 6
National Champions, 10 Silver Medalist and 17 Bronze Medalist. In Team Competition,
the group achieved a total of 33 more medals, including 2 National Champions, 4 Silver
Medalists and 4 Bronze Medalists. Norm has been in our Department for a number of
years and is supervised by Betsy Kennedy and Robin Bettin. This is an extraordinary
achievement and documents, as with our Dance Program, just how outstanding the
Department Instructional Classes have become. Congratulations to Norm and his
remarkable students!
AQUATICS
A quick report from Carl Pope and his fine staff - quick because frankly they're just too
busy to come out of the water right now! Forty-six classes per week are run through
the Aquatics Center with approximately 250 kids in that period being exposed to water
safety and stroke instruction. This goes on each week throughout most of the summer!
SPECIAL EVENTS
Marc Beasley and staff undertook the task of running the most ambitious Summer
Camp Programs in the Department's history. Marc offered camps in all the traditional
sports, but also new camps such as Cheernastics and Gymnastics; Science and
Computers; and even a preschool camp. This summer is one-third complete and the
camps have been a resounding success. Most camps are jam packed with waiting
lists. Marc and key staff, Heather Calvin and Marcel Verdugo are to be commended for
the work! Marc, Heather and staff are also preparing for the Carlsbad International
Bodysurfing Championships. Considered one of the World's most prestigious contest,
the event is scheduled for August 9, 10 and 11.
LAGOON CLEAN UP
Superintendent, Ken Price reports that Lagoon Specialist Barbara Allen, and other staff
along with more than 50 volunteers spent 4-5 hours each in cleaning up Agua
Hedionda Lagoon on a recent Saturday. The outer, middle and inner lagoons were
picked clean of trash by the volunteers that included the Bristol Cover Homeowners
Association, Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation and community people. Bristol Cove
residents made their boats available as volunteers were ferried across the inner lagoon
to clean the South beaches. Tom King and his Agua Hedionda Foundation volunteers
were integral in scouring the shorelines for refuse. The Bristol Cove Homeowners
Association was also kind enough to provide financial support to the cause to help
supply the volunteers with equipment and refreshments. Mr. King and his group were
also essential in the pre-event publicity that helped enlist all the great volunteers! The
lagoon has been returned to the clean environment we love, and is now a more
enjoyable place to visit for recreation!
SENIORS
Over 90 seniors attended "Kitchen Sink Theatre" - the finale of the Spring Semester
Drama class sponsored by Mira Costa College. The performance was a collection of
skits that originated from improvisational work done throughout the semester.
The North County Times donated 25 tickets to Carlsbad Night at Jack Murphy Stadium
to see the Padres beat the Cubs. Our mini-bus took the seniors all of whom greatly
enjoyed the entire evening.
The 8th Annual Ice Cream Social was held on July 7. Even though the weather was
overcast and cool there was a good turnout. Everyone enjoyed the music of CC
Sanders "The Candyman".
"The Healing Powers of Music" will be presented by Jacquelyne Silver on Wednesday,
August 7, from 9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m. in the Senior Auditorium.
Monday Mysteries August Film Festival at 1:00 p.m.
August 12 - "Rebecca"
August 19 - "A Touch of Evil"
August 26 - "North by Northwest"
Mystery classics from the 40's and 50's.
STAFF
Mr. Andy Meade, our Adult Sports Assistant and league coordinator has left the City of
Carlsbad and has taken a position with Northwest Financial Group. The "Suit & Tie"
career was something Andy had strived toward and we wish him the best, and will miss
him very much. Andy was originally hired in 1987 as a scorekeeper and rose through
the ranks to a position of greater responsibility. Good Luck in your future endeavors,
Drew!
