ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for August 1996. EXHIBITS: 1. Director's Report - August 1996. .10 August 13, 1996 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR AUGUST 1996 AQUATICS With mid-August upon us, we see our popular summer swim lesson program coming to an end. This summer we had over 1100 participants in our program. We had swim lessons for individuals from ages 6 months in our Parent-Infant classes to some seniors in our Adult Learn to Swim classes. After a three year lay off we brought back our Synchronized Swimming class and with the help of the Olympics we have seen great interest in that. Of course summertime is our busy season and we have had many days with the pool in use from 5:30 in the morning to 9:30 or 10:00 at night in order to accommodate such programs as age group Water Polo, the Springboard diving team, North Coast Aquatics age group swim team, the popular Masters swim program, Aqua-X water aerobics and a lifeguard instructor class. All this in addition to our lessons and recreation and lap swimming. Nearing the end of August, we will be closing the Swim Complex for a week to do repairs to the fiberglass pool shell and numerous other projects at the Complex. Following that, we start into our fall schedule that includes the continuance of swim lessons being taught seven days a week and the start of the High School water polo team using our facility. This, along with our other normal programs equates to a busy fall for the Swim Complex and staff. o> ADULT SPORTS Sendee Oiler reports that 96 Men's, Women's and Coed teams just began league play at Stagecoach, Calavera Hills and Brierly fields. The end of August will signify completion of the section's annual summer 3 on 3 basketball league. 30 teams have enjoyed the competition throughout the summer. On the heels of that season's completion is the start of the traditional fall 5 man basketball league that begins just after Labor Day. Sendee has been busy since July 1 when she assumed the position of Recreation Assistant / Adult Sports. She quickly learned the job, and has been doing additional duty as her supervisor, Jill Prichard is excitedly awaiting the birth of her first child in September. EXHIBIT 1 TRIATHLON As if not already busy and excited about that very special arrival, Jill once again pulled off an outstanding job in supervising the department's biggest event, our annual Triathlon. More than 10,000 people attended the Saturday's Triathlon Festival, and 1000+ athletes enjoyed the competition on Sunday. The City's annual Triathlon is one very important element of what makes the City of Carlsbad such a special and unique place to reside and recreate. DAYTRIPPERS Dave Millikan and Carmen Lopez report that the "Lucky Bus" will be departing as it heads to Laughlin, Nevada on September 7. Many a winner has come back from these Carlsbad-sponsored trips headed up by our ace tour guide, Carmen Lopez. Feeling lucky? SENIORS The San Diego Zoo presented "Celebrate the World", a slide presentation outlining the history of the zoo and an overview of the San Diego Zoological Society's worldwide conservation efforts. 30 people attended and got to pet a warm and fuzzy chinchilla! This month, seniors will learn how to let the power of music put them on the road to good health. Pianist, lecturer and performer Jacquelyne Silver will present this fun and entertaining seminar titled: "The Healing Power of Music". Admission is $1.00 at the door. A historic preservation group, E Clampus Vitus, constructed a monument to house the bronze California Landmark plaque as well as a plaque recognizing the ranch's place on the National Register of Historic Places. There were approximately 50 guests in attendance, including the City's own mayor and council members, who enjoyed refreshments and a tour of the ranch after the dedication. Immediately following, Mark Steyaert, Park Development Coordinator, led a meeting of the Carrillo Ranch Master Plan Steering Committee. Poinsettia Park Construction of Phase I of the park is nearly complete. Planting of the grass at the park was completed the first two weeks of August. The ballfields were planted using a process called "stolenization", which consists of inplanting "stolens" or pieces of already growing Bermuda grass into the prepared soil. The contractor's 4 month maintenance period will begin soon. They will see that the grass grows and the weeds are pulled. The park is scheduled to open to the public around Christmas of this year. Carrillo Ranch The master planning for the Ranch is underway. The Master Plan Steering Committee has had two meeting and with assistance of the consultant team, is reviewing historical data and opportunities and constraints maps. Staff is currently planning a community workshop for late September or early October. On the activity play fields, the Parks Department is keeping busy by gearing up for the fall soccer season with turf renovations at a number of facilities.
