P.P. Hosp & Partners planted 40,000 eucalyptus seedlings early in 1908, creating
this grove. They hoped to satisfy Santa Fe Railroad's need for railroad ties and
telegraph poles. However, eucalyptus wood proved unsuitable. It twisted and
rotted in the ground, so the trees were never harvested. Following a citizen vote
in 1987, 53 acres of the grove was acquired by the City of Carlsbad. Coupled with
the previously dedicated parkland, a total of 74 acres, known as "Hosp Grove",
remain today as park and open space. The 5.5 acre park on which this plaque
stands was dedicated in December 1995.
