ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for September 1996. EXHIBITS: 1. Director's Report - September 1996 12 September 10, 1996 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 1996 ADULT SPORTS Adult Sports Coordinator, Sendee Oiler reports that Fall Softball is in "full swing" as nearly 100 teams take the field throughout the week at various City sites. She also states that registration for Fall Basketball is in midstream with opening action slated for the first week of October. Sendee mentions that the office has added one person to help with the paperwork and daily public inquiries. Ms. Tami Mason, a recent Carlsbad High grad is doing an excellent job in this new role! AQUATICS Supervisor, Carl Pope, states that repair to the Swim Complex pool shell is complete. The project finished on time as workers repaired areas in the shallow end of the pool. Carl says there is "nice, fresh water" in the pool now. Carl also forwards the info, that Fall swim lessons have begun with three (3) sessions running throughout the week and on Saturdays. The Complex is also playing host to seven (7) home matches for the Carlsbad Lancer Water Polo Team. The Lancers and other San Diego County teams will be converging on the Swim Complex the weekend of September 27 and 28 to participate in a 25 team Invitational Water Polo Tournament. Ongoing users of the Complex Pool include a "Springboard Diving Club" that utilizes the site on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The North Coast Aquatics Club has resumed their workouts on weekdays. mx DAYTRIPPERS J% ??????????? I—I Dave Millikan reports that Daytripper Coordinator, Carmen Lopez, has a very special CO "Mystery Trip" slated for October 5. Participants are advised to wear play clothes and *"!? be prepared for an adventure! Other outings include a Founder's Day Trip to the San Diego Zoo, October 7, and an exploration trip to the "Living Desert" in Palm Springs on October 26. YOUTH SPORTS/SPECIAL EVENTS Marc Beasley and staff are busily preparing for the Annual Carlsbad Coastal Clean-Up. Scheduled for Saturday, September 21, citizens will be cleaning the ocean as well as Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Workers are provided bags, gloves and pickers to clean our beautiful coastline. Volunteers will also be provided refreshments for their efforts. Marcel Verdugo and his staff in Youth Sports are revving up for the Youth Basketball season. Saturday, September 28, marks the first training date for Marcel and his staff. This begins a season that runs every Saturday through early March and involves more than 700 kids. SENIORS A full mini-bus of 25 people enjoyed the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach on Saturday, August 10. Performer, pianist and lecturer Jacquelyne Silver enthralled the audience with "The Healing Powers of Music". Ms. Silver shared how music can help to lift your mood or to help you relax. The Senior Center hosted the first annual August Monday Mysteries on three (3) Mondays in August. Classic mysteries from the 40's were enjoyed by over 30 seniors each week. The seniors enjoyed being in the cool air conditioning, eating popcorn and watching great movie classics. The Carlsbad Senior Center along with Tri-City Hospital started their co-sponsored free informational seminars. The first seminar: An Overview of Tri-City Hospital was presented by Michelle Davis, Coordinator of Community Advisor Council. Although the turnout for this presentation was small, those in attendance were able to ask many good questions about the hospital's services. A much greater attendance is expected for the remaining seminars. The schedule is attached. A Fall Piano Recital starring Keith Weeks and Kathreen Prout will be the September showplace at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23. There is no admission to enjoy the classical music and show tunes played by these two talented, former professional senior pianists. The Annual Craft & White Elephant Sale presented by the Crafti Grafters will be held on Friday, October 4, from 9:00 a.m. -1:30 p.m. in the Gallery of the Senior Center. Open to the public this sale features unique handmade gifts, drawings for special holiday prizes as well as great garage sale items. Don't miss it!! (I never do!) Upcoming Seminars: October 7, at 10:00 a.m. - Grief: How to Cope with a Significant Loss and November 7, at 10:00 a.m. - Alzheimer's Disease: Treatment and Management. 14 PRESCHOOL 187 children ages 1-5 are enrolled in our parent participant preschool programs at Calavera, Stagecoach and Kruger House and the Scout House. Our ten (10) talented preschool instructors will be teaching a variety of classes from Parent-Toddler 1's to Pre-Kindergarten. We are looking forward to another school year. CALAVERA HILLS CENTER Over 4,000 people attended the TGIF Jazz concerts at Calavera Hills Park. Over 400 youth attended a variety of camps held at the center in the month of August. Hats off to our Special Events staff and contract instructors. Fall classes are off to a great start with over 3,000 children and adults enrolled.
