RECEIPT OF DONATION/TRIATHLON

RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Receive individual donations and in kind services totaling $28,800 in support of the 1996 Carlsbad
Triathlon and Luau Festival and request that the donations be accepted by the City Council.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The following businesses/organizations have offered donations of products or services in support of
the Carlsbad Triathlon and Luau Festival

The 19% Carlsbad Triathlon and Luau Festival was held the weekend of July 13/14, 1996.
The 2nd Annual Luau Festival on Saturday had expanded activities for families and athletes,
including: a surf exhibition, kayak lessons, a sand castle demonstration and contest and a
children's fun run. The department plans to expand the fun run next year. Overall, the
Luau Expo and related events attracted an estimated 7,000 participants on Saturday. Due in
part, to the donations received, the event was once again considered a success by staff,
participants and spectators.
The Triathlon race itself attracted 995 athletes from San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles
Counties. The participation level was 8% higher than in 1995. The number of Spectator's
at the race was estimated to be around 5,000.
A letter of appreciation has been sent on behalf of the Community Services Department to all of the
businesses and organizations.

No fiscal impact to general fund.
