TITLE: HISTORIC/INTERPRETIVE PLAQUE FOR HOSP GROVE
(ACTION)
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Consider a recommendation from the Historic Preservation Commission regarding the proposed
wording for a historic/interpretive plaque for Hosp Grove and take appropriate action.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The Historic preservation Commission has respectfully submitted new wording for the proposed
Hosp Grove Plaque for consideration by the Parks and Recreation Commission.
In submitting this revision, the Historic Preservation Commission feels it is important to explain
why eucalyptus wood proved to be unsuitable for railroad ties and telegraph poles. Previously
approved wording for the plaque did not identify why eucalyptus was never harvested. This
revision provides the explanation that eucalyptus was never harvested because it is a twisted
and hard wood which proved unsuitable for railroad purposes.
Staff feels that the proposed wording, based upon past revisions by each commission creates an
appropriate historical and interpretive perspective contributed by both commissions. Therefore,
in an effort to bring closure to this issue and continue effective working relationship between
commissions, staff is recommending approval of the proposed wording.
EXHIBITS:
1. Previous approved wording for Hosp Grove Plaque.
2. Proposed revision as submitted by Historic Preservation Commission - September 1996.

PLAQUE FOR HOSP GROVE PARK
Early in 1908, F.P. Hosp & Partners planted 40,000
eucalyptus seedlings creating this grove. They hoped to
satisfy Santa Fe Railroad's need for railroad ties and
telegraph poles. Eucalyptus, a twisted and hard wood,
proved unsuitable for the railroad's purposes. Following a
citizen vote in 1987, 53 acres of the grove were acquired by
the City of Carlsbad. Coupled with previously dedicated
parkland, a total of 74 acres known as Hosp Grove remains
today as park and open space. The 5.5 acre park where
this plaque now stands was dedicated in December 1995.
