ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for November 1996. EXHIBITS: 1. Director's Report - November 1996. 06 November 14, 1996 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 1996 ADULT SPORTS Adult Softball is winding up this month. The teams have entered playoff tournament action. Basketball is well underway. Due to the high number of participants, the Adult Sports office added an extra Basketball league on Wednesday's at Calavera Community Center. YOUTH SPORTS/SPECIAL EVENTS The Special Events section hosted its annual Halloween Mansion & Carnival in October at the Calavera Community Center. The Mansion attracted over 800 thrill seekers on October 25-27. The Carnival was held on October 31 and 350 children ranging in ages from 1-5 years enjoyed games, prizes, caramel apples and craft projects. The Mansion's efforts also raised $600 for the American Cross and the Harmony Grove fire victims. The Stay n' Play program is about to end its first session of the year. Currently the program has 75 children participating in tutoring sports and crafts at Pine Elementary school. Gian Lauro and staff are busily preparing for the Annual Youth Baseball clinic slated for the second week of January, the Clinic will feature outstanding instruction by local baseball coaches as well as appearances by Padre personalities. Youth Basketball is bigger than ever. Up six (6) teams and 50 youngsters from last year, the program's 700 youngsters are slated to begin play on Saturday, December 7. Twenty-five (25) Seniors enjoyed a guided tour of the Batiquitos Lagoon Project and a picnic lunch at Carlsbad State Beach. The Seniors were very interested in learning about development projects in Carlsbad. Seniors will surf the net with hands-on Internet instruction at Valley Junior High School on December 5. Instructor Lew Pearsall and several students host the Seniors to an evening in cyberspace. Lots of holiday specials scheduled including: • Monthly movie "Home for the Holidays" • A Cup of Christmas Tea Party • Warbler's Annual Holiday Concert • Holiday Sing Along • Movie Special "Christmas Vacation" 12/12 12/16 12/18 12/19 12/23 1:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. 1:30 p.m. 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. AQUATICS Last month the Swim Complex passed a major milestone. On October 24, the pool and facility turned 15 years old! Happy Birthday to the Swim Complex. Currently, the water polo season is upon us. The Carlsbad High School boys' varsity team is in first place in the Avocado League, and is gearing up for the GIF playoffs. Also, NEW this year is a girls' water polo team! The Carlsbad High School team just started practices, with 50 girls coming out to fill the freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity teams. Their season starts in late November and runs until the end of February. Good luck to the girls and their new team. In years past we have had pool repairs or renovations planned for this time of year, but not this time! Other than major holidays, we are open every day, with the pool water kept at a comfortable 82 degrees. DAYTRIPPERS Get in the holiday spirit by attending the 23rd Annual "Living Christmas Tree" program in Lemon Grove on Sunday, December 8. See the spectacularly decorated waterfront homes along the channels of Huntington Harbor during the "Cruise of Lights" on Saturday, December 14. Reserve your seats now for the 1997 Pasadena Rose Parade. This years theme is "Life's Shining Moments." 08 PARKS Parks and especially the Tree crew have been busy assisting with fire related issues. The crews helped with sandbagging activities to help curtail erosion and provide sandbags to residents in need. They have been working with Conservation Corp. in the removal of burned brush and fire fuel. Almost six full days were spent chipping brush. Preliminary estimates of over 115 street trees were damaged or destroyed. An early approximate estimate of their value is over $150,000.
