DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR DECEMBER 1996
YOUTH SPORTS/SPECIAL EVENTS
Marcel Verdugo and his staff have just begun the Youth Basketball season with 700
youngsters on 74 teams playing through March at both Calavera Hills and Stagecoach
Community Parks. The size of the program is up by 15%. Marcel and staff have also
incorporated some exciting new concepts which include the return of the
sponsor/parent booklet, "Sister University" Program and NYSCA training for coaches.
Future programs include February's Youth Golf Clinic, March's Brad Holland Basketball
Camp and April's Junior High Invitational Basketball Tourney.
Marc Beasley and staff have just completed another highly successful Youth Teen
Dance. Held on Friday, December 6, the event attracted more than 300 youths to the
Calavera Hills Community Center. The kids really got into the "70's Theme" as many
were "decked out" in their finest polyester and "high hair". Upcoming events for Marc's
group include Winter Camp, a two week day camp for kids. This day camp runs for two
weeks starting Monday, December 23. A highlight of the two week's is a "Sleepover"
for kids on New Year's Eve.
The Stay N' Play Program continues to show good numbers as kids at Pine and
Jefferson Elementary Schools flock to this afterschool program. Marc reports that in
the two sessions just completed, there were approximately 120 kids enjoying the
afterschool educational and athletic activities.
DAYTRIPPERS
An excursion to Huntington Harbor is scheduled for Saturday, December 14. Highlights
of the trip include a cruise along the channels that allow spectators to view the lights on
local homes and businesses.
PART TIME EMPLOYEES OF THE QUARTER
Five outstanding employees were recently awarded the "Part-Time Employee of the
Quarter" for the period of September to December 1996. They are as follows:
Rosemary Cruger - Computer Specialist/Harding Community Center )
Dan Hoppe - Facility Attendant /Calavera Hills Community Center
Dena Kerr - Preschool Instructor/Kruger House . ^ Q
Jim Stuckrad - Front Desk/Stagecoach Community Center
Marcel Verdugo - Youth Sports Coordinator/Harding Community Center
These five individuals attained and maintained superior marks in all criteria areas
during this period, and staff and the Recreation Division extends congratulations to
them for their awards!
AQUATICS
This year will be the first year in the last five that the Swim Complex is scheduled to
remain open through the winter with no closures (except Christmas and New Years).
The schedule runs from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. during the week with Adult Lap and
Recreation Swim, Aqua X, Masters, North Coast Aquatics and Carlsbad High School
P.E. classes and Girl's Water Polo Team workouts. The Girl's water polo games are
scheduled for the evening of December 9 and 17th, plus a tournament from 2:30 p.m. on
Friday the 13th through 8 p.m. on Saturday the 14th.
Registration is now being accepted at the American Red Cross North Coastal Service
Center for the North Coast Lifeguard Academy, which is a joint effort of the cities of
Carlsbad and Oceanside and the Red Cross.
SENIORS
December 5, thirty seniors took advantage of the invitation by Valley Junior High
School to use their Mac Lab to surf the Internet. Hands on instruction was provided by
several high school students to show the seniors the wonders of the world wide web.
This intergenerational program was greatly enjoyed by the students and seniors alike.
January 16, 1997 - "New Cruise Destinations for 1997" is the name of a free seminar
with Anny Wright of Ace of Travel at 10:00 a.m. in the auditorium. Door prizes!
January 22,1997 - The Carlsbad Senior Center and the San Diego Crime Commission
are co-sponsors of a panel discussion titled: FRAUD CRIMES AGAINST SENIORS, to
be held at the Senior Center on Wednesday, January 22, 1997 from 9:00 -11:30 a.m.
The panel will be moderated by Mr. Will Bachner, News Anchor at KDCI in Carlsbad.
Panelist include: Julia Craig-Kelety, Assistant U.S. Attorney, David G. Fast, U.S.
Postal Service, Sgt. Dennis Yoshonis, San Diego County Sheriff-Fraud Division. All
seniors are welcome to attend this free discussion.
LEO CARRILLO RANCH MASTER PLAN
On December 18, the City will be hosting a "Children's Workshop" to gain valuable
insight into what our younger citizens would like included in the Carrillo Ranch Master
Plan. Ten teachers from local schools will bring along one child each from their school
to participate in the workshop. They will meet at the Safety Center at noon and will
enjoy lunch and a slide show on the life of Leo Carrillo presented by the Friends of
Carrillo Ranch. The children will then be shuttled to the Ranch for a tour then a
workshop.

POINSETTIA PARK
The contractor's landscape maintenance period is nearly complete. After the City
accepts the work, City forces will maintain the park for about a month to put the final
touches on the project. The PARK DEDICATION CEREMONIES are scheduled for
Saturday, January 18, 1997. Please mark your calendars now and stay tuned for more
inforraaTton.
